Just guessing, but you should check your "hosts" file (located e.g. here: C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\etc)

There was nothing odd in the hosts file (just lots of SpyBot stuff), but while in there I added the link between the IP address and the server name which smees to have done the trick. I can now access TV on the laptop. First trials show that this is pretty unwatchable, but this could be the wifi or the (lack of) horsepower on the laptop.

Any other ideas on eliminating kauchuk.ru from my laptop?

Yep, both of the things you mentioned often cause problems.
Check codecs.
Try UNC paths.
There are lots of things you can do from here.

That explains how Windows resolves hostnames. If that doesn't help... I wonder, could there be config in your router that needs to be checked?
