You will get a zero byte file left there if thumbnail creation fails.

However, this is only for the HD channel, which fails with mtn.exe manually.

These logs don't include an attempt at thumb creation for star gate atlantis.

Since the logs above (mtn manually) mention codecs, perhaps you could try different codecs. Maybe the codec priority is not the best. I really am not sure at this point.

Unfortunately there seems to have been no development on mtn.exe since 2008.

Well the only Codecs on this system are those installed standard with Windows 7, those installed by MePo installation automatically and LAV0.45. Every Codec listed in MePo on my system will play these files, so I'm not sure what I can change to help it.

When I manually created the thumb for Stargate I left mtn.exe to its default, ie I didn't specify any parameters, so I would assume that if its a codec issue, then MePo is passing it some parameter to change from default?

Yeah its a shame its dead. Maybe one day smeone with coding skills will make something else specifically for MePo.

I don't think you will be able to use that alternate since it replaces the tvplugin.dll - I think the Sky EPG stuff also replaces it...

I think somewhere in the thread he posted the code that he'd changed in the dll and it wasn't alot. Maybe SkyEPG guy could integrate that change into his dll

This thread uses a patched TVPlugin.dll which might not work with MP 1.2.2. Also you can have only one picture as thumbnail. I prefer 4 small pictures, 2 rows and 2 columns.

Yeah seems a bit of a pain in the arse for some thumbs..

Guess its suck it and wait until a MePo dev has some time to come up with another solution. Its not too much of a hardship but it would be nice to have

What else you can try is:
Go to http://moviethumbnail.sourceforge.net/ and download the MTN from there. LINK to download!

Now put all .dll files + mtn.exe from the .rar file (with folders src & doc do nothing) to Team MediaPortal\MediaPortal\thumbnails and replace the existing files there.

Also make sure you have ticked "Autocreate thumbs" (TV/Video thumbs) in MP Config:
