It's not decided how and when EVE will be released. However, it's probable that the home automation part is removed if it is released as a separate app in appstore.

I know that implementing the home automation function is something very personal, there are a lot of systems out there all using different code :-(

We develop in Command Fusions guiDesigner, it is very flexible and can handle most system as long it has a tcp or udp protocol. One can also use Javascript code for even more customization, we use it a lot. So I recommend you to test Command Fusion, the guiDesigner/iViewer for iPad is free but iViewer is limited to use of only one page and no lists without a valid license. What you make can then be integrated to eve.

I'll have a run, can't find a lot of youtube how-to's :-(

You will find that the command fusion documentation is a bit sparse and spread over different sources. However, their google group is good for quick questions and their api document is ok. Also, in their google group you will find a sticky to several small github projects.

Its a steep learning curve but I think its worth the effort because of the flexibility of their solution. Their main market is custom installers and not direct end users.
