Picture quality MP1.0 vs DVBviewer (4 Viewers)

Hello,

I have tried the (experimental) EVR renderer under XP. This gave the same result. Again there was aliasing or pixelation noticeable. Very, very strange . . . . Again it is very small ('Joe the Plumber' will not see it) but engineers/technicians will notice this.

Second. I've attached the graphs (VMR9 used) of both applications (Mediaportal and DVBviewer) while watching the Dutch TV broadcaster RTL4 (standard definition MPEG2). The video quality of DVBviewer is better on my 50" Panasonic plasma screen.

I have made some recordings where the difference is clearly visible. If a have more time, I will post some (magnified) screendumps of the TV picture of both applications (if possible).

Regards,
Nico

Mister Bean: What about posting a small recording. As we share very similar setups (up to the Panasonic 50" Plasma) I'm very interrested to see if I can reproduce your findings in my environment.

grubi and others,

Here are two (cropped) screendumps of both applications (DVBviewer and Mediaportal). I hope the difference in picture quality is clearly visible. I have also attached a zipped TS-file of the recording where the pictures are taken from.

Regards,
Nico

OK, I just installed MP 1.0 last night and as others have mentioned the picture quality of MPEG2 video is just not as good as DVBViewer (both using VMR9). One thing that occured to me, could it simply be that MP is more resource hungry, so only an inferior deinterlacer can be used?

On another issue, is it possible to have a VMR7 option in MP as I get tearing on AVC/h.264 with VMR9 9 on both DVBViewer and MP.

I guess you know yourself that comparing videos (even more at such a low bitrate) you must use the exact same frame... Seems like not even the resolution and aspect ratio is identical.

    rtv,

I know that, but it seems to be impossible to capture exactly the same frame in Mediaportal and DVBviewer. Bottomline is that in my case DVBviewer offers a better quality MPEG2 picture with exactly the same graph. I think the difference in quality is only visible on (very) large screens >50 inch.

Nope, using only 19" monitor here I can see the difference clearly.

Indeed the frames should be the same ones, otherwise is almost impossible to efven guess what could be causing the issue.

Have you tried the different VMR9 resize algorithm settings?

    tourettes,

Where can I change this VMR9 resize algorithm settings? Is this Mediaportal configuration-->DirectShow filter control-->VMR9-->filtering mode? If yes, then I've tried several filtering modes. Unfortunately without result. I can not see any differences between the several filtering modes. . . .

Yes, those are the settings that I was thinking of.

btw. what deinterlace mode you have set in the Cyberlink's codec configuration (under PowerDVD's own settings). Somehow the artefacts on the MP screenshot look like BOB could have been used :)
