As we all know the new TV Server will be 100% Microsoft Depended (.NET, SQL Server, etc...) service, and surely cannot run under other platforms.
The Idea is to port it to an independed service that can run on Windows or Linux, by using the equivalent open-source software like mono (=.NET) and mysql(=SqlServer) in order to achieve two goals:
1. Performance.
2. Pure Open-Source software that can run on any platform.

I'm a *nix system administrator and a developer myself and I would like to know :
1. What do you think of this idea?
2. Can you help develop this kind of project? What skills and knowledge you have in order to do so?

The idea is not to port entire MP into Linux, just the TV engine service.

Much luck with tv card driver support.. ;-) Seems like you didn't try to use tv cards under Linux until now. Although cat and netcat should be enough for DVB under linux :p

    Hi,

The port to linux/unix story again... ;)
Maybe do a search on the forum or look into the code before you start venting ideas. For a starter, the engine is (still) completely based on DirectShow. Good luck with porting that first to linux! ;) Read this.

    Kind regards,
    Michel

I really miss the point of this discussion
If you want a tvserver under linux then simply download mythTv and use that

Personally i would much rather see it the other way around. A MP client for linux would be real nice. especially if it could run without X.
I run a windows server anyway but i wouldnt mind a fast booting, freeware and lighter system for the client.

I agree 100% with XStream. However, I think the TV server (the best thing on the internet - even better than porn) will do for now.

My god! Better than porn you say? Damnit, go faster stupid download, i gotta try this!
You know the good thing about mp tv server as opposed to porn is that here in Sweden its actually getting kinda chilly and now i don't need to get my clothes off. :)

ofcourse, having a light weight client on linux would pretty much require the server to decode and stream everything. personally i would love that. having total control over filters and directories and not having to map network drives and a million different settings on each machine.
Pretty much all i would want the client to do is decide what features it uses and how the interface should look.

Kinda like any of the so called media centers from dlink and such manufacturers do, except with tv support and a heck of alot more features.
