I would also love to have multiple Moving Pictures on the one system.

My reason is that I have about 300 movies, and I'd like to put the kids ones in a dedicated section

But, if there is better filtering coming, it would be good to be able to load Moving Pictures, and then be able to have a predefined filter as your default view (eg. Unwatched, Kids, Horror, Comedy), the press left or right to see your other preconfigured filters.

If you're comfortable building your own dll from the moving-pictures source code, I can walk you through an unsupported method of getting multiple instances of moving-pictures to work. Some minor modifications to the source is required.

Again, this is unsupported, so if you do it and something doesn't work correctly (I have had no issues, mind you), the moving-pictures team will not answer questions regarding problems you might experience running 2 instances of the plugin. It would be entirely at your own risk.

For the record, the filtering system will be great and all, but I run multiple instances of the plugin to keep some of my catalog DVD titles separate from my regular viewing/HD material. There's no real way for me to tag those as "catalog DVD titles" in m-p (right now), so keeping them separate and in a separate database, is nice.

Hi whiskaz,

could you give me some information about building my own dll?
Having multiple instances would be great! Better than filtering system for me...

tbomber,

I'll try to provide a dll tonight that will give you a 2nd instance of m-p. I'll post the modifications I had to make as well.

I'll make the disclaimer again when I post it, but it will be an at-your-own-risk sorta thing. Issues encountered while using multiple instances of the plugin will not be supported by the moving-pics dev team (or me! :))

In the meantime, if you want to learn how to get the source and build it:

DevelopmentEnvironmentMain - moving-pictures - Intro section of instructions to get up a working development environment setup to contribute to Moving Pictures. - Google Code

Attached is a DLL that should allow a second instance of moving-pictures (Moving-Pictures DVD in the config).

All you have to do, besides copy the dll to your plugins folder, is make a copy of movingpictures.xml in your skin folder and rename it movingpicturesDVD.xml. Edit movingpicturesDVD.xml and change the <id> from 96742 to 96743.

The only issue that I currently experience is some weirdness with fan and coverart when I go from one instance of moving-pics to the other. Sometimes the fan/coverart from the previous instance of moving-pics will hang around until you navigate through the list (in list view - I honestly haven't tested other views).

AGAIN - THIS IS NOT SUPPORTED BY THE MOVING-PICS DEVELOPERS. Please refrain from reporting issues while using this setup. If you have a problem that you think is related to moving-pictures, remove the extra DLL and retest to ensure that it's not causing the issue.

If you have any questions about getting this setup, shoot me a PM. I'll do my best to help.

On the subject of weirdness w/ fan/coverart. I figured out a partial solution that seemed to fix the coverart problem but not fanart. The attached DLL won't support it at the moment, but if I create a copy of all 4 moving-pics skin files and provide a unique property (e.g. #MovingPicturesDVD.CoverArt), coverart seems to work going from one instance to the other. Even with those changes, fanart still has a problem. I'm not sure why. For the time being, if you use the attached DLL, you'll have to put up with the flakiness of fan/coverart when going from m-p1 to m-p2.

Sorry whiskaz, I don't mind you posting tips on how to set something like this up, and if you want to post binaries outside the forum (via PM or whatever) that is your own prerogative, but I really don't want unsupported binaries posted publicly around here. This will only make the other developers and my job more difficult. I hope you understand. :(

sorry for pushing this topic on top again, but is there any timeline for this 0.8 release with a kind of filter / parental control? the "original" mymovies with the separated folders and a configurable pin code is really good... but moving pictures seems to be more comfortable when using fanart and looks nicer.

so it would be great to have the same features in moving pictures too and i must not be angry if my daughter scrolls through the movie database...
