Since I finally bit the bullet and decided to build a basic HTPC to go in the front room, I've been seeing problems streaming recorded TV to this box. There's another thread here that talks about something similar.

Basically, playing back recorded TV from the box upstairs that does the recording, to the box in the front room almost always ends up with choppy playback. It tends to be more noticeable towards the start and end of the film from what I've noticed (although that may not mean anything at all).

If I play back the files locally upstairs, they are fine. Thinking it might be a network issue, I plugged my netgear EVA700 back in and played the files again downstairs using the exact same cable across the exact same bit of network, and they play perfectly.

So, there's something going on that's causing this, and I don't believe it's the network. Whether it's a configuration issue my end, a codec problem, or something MediaPortal is doing, I don't know. All I do know is it's bloody irritating trying to watch :)

Log files attached from both machines (although the downstairs one doesn't seem to contain an awful lot)

[edited to change RC1 to RC2 in system setup]

Just as another check, and before anybody else asks me to (assuming anybody actually replies that is), I put a PCI NIC in the machine to rule out problems with the onboard NIC.

Hasn't made any difference unfortunately, so I'm open to suggestions before I have to bin the idea of using MP as the main HTPC for the family and go back to the setup I had before (that didn't stutter over the network)

Nobody?

Not a single suggestion?

Guess that's about it for me and MP then in it's current state. If it can't stream recorded TV without stuttering, not much point in continuing to try :(

Thought I'd give this one more go.

I swapped the motherboard over for an NForce 3 board I had laying around. Reinstalled windows, reinstalled drivers, reinstalled MP, and I'm still getting stuttering playback when playing files across the network. Yet again, if I play the files from my EVA700, there isn't a single stutter.

Now I'm sure MediaPortal has a lot more going on under the hood than my Netgear box, but why should I be getting stuttering in MP and not on my EVA?

Anyone ... Anyone ... Bueller ...?

If it is network that is the problem, how do the files play if using VLC player, this will prove one way or the other.

Sorry, use networks very infrequently, so this could be a learning curve for me.

Might be worthwhile downloading the powerdvd8 trial, and using the codecs from that, as the nvidia ones have not been updated in over 18 months.

Thanks PD, I'll give VLC a bash and post back. Should be fairly quick and easy to determine.

Ok, so I installed VLC last night and watched a 45 minute program that I'd recorded earlier in the evening. Not a single stutter. The worst I saw was a few audio glitches.

Played another recording with MP this morning, very noticeable stuttering in various places. She who runs the house TM ;) played the same recording last night and said she only noticed it stutter once or twice.

I'll download the PowerDVD trial and change the codecs to that and see if it makes any difference.

Installed PowerDVD (gee, they could invest in some bandwidth instead of passing it off to download.com at awful speeds!) and changed decoder settings in MP to Cyberlink Video/SP Decoder (PDVD8). There's three different ones there, but one of them looks like it's for HD, and the other one talks about HomeNetwork. I just went for option 2 :)

I also updated to .Net 3.5 SP1 that I noticed was available for download today.

Watched a film at lunchtime. It's still stuttering, but it did seem to be less so. Whether that was just luck or not, I don't know. Still, as the test with VLC showed zero stuttering without using the PowerDVD codecs, there's still something not quite right within MP.
