Thank you for the reply! I plan to do my first Media Portal on Tuesday which is why I'm trying to find out exactly what the best approach is before I even go ahead with the format.

I'm having trouble understanding what the benefit of using SAF over Goose's codec guide for instance. What have I missed? Thank you for your help

I ran into the same problem with all versions of this program. The only way I have found to fix it is to use AC3filter as my audio decoder. When I do the audio playback is perfect. I have run into a issue with these filters not allowing me to use AC3filter even when selected in MP so you will need to use graphedit to make sure.

The point of SAF is to get Hardware Acceleration working, so your graphics card does the work instead of your cpu. Goose's guide uses FFDSHOW, which is a software decoder. So, that's fine if you have a fast cpu. I run a p4 2.8ghz and with DXVA working I can run a 1080p with 5% cpu usage! Awesome.

Running DXVA you won't get subtitles, but that doesn't matter to me.

Back when I was ripping dvd's to my hard drive goose's guide worked great.

Well, just to post note about DVD's riping - if somebody want relly esay way how to rip DVD to MKV to be DXVA compatible, use XviD4PSP + any "on the fly" DVD decoding software.

In other words this mean DXVA + subtitles will be possible

It is sheduled to 1.0.2 MP version.

If Australia uses AVC/h.264 for TV (I know NZ does) you'll still need the Cyberlink PowerDVD or Elecard AVC decoder.

That helps a lot, cheers. My HTPC is running a AMD 5200+ on a Gigabyte MA78GM-S2H. It has onboard ATI Radeon HD3200 graphics so I think that software decoding is probably ideal.

Interesting, so Haali/ffdshow does not support AVC/h.264 decoding? Good to know. I'm not sure what our TV streams are encoded with as I'm making this move from Vista Ultimate (using VMC for TV) so it did not require much manual intervention. I plan on installing PowerDVD for Blu-ray/HD-DVD support as I have a BD/HDDVD combo drive in my HTPC; I assume this will cover me for the AVC/h.264 decoding then?

Halli is not decoder, it is media splitter.
