If Australia uses AVC/h.264 for TV (I know NZ does) you'll still need the Cyberlink PowerDVD or Elecard AVC decoder.

Interesting, so Haali/ffdshow does not support AVC/h.264 decoding? Good to know. I'm not sure what our TV streams are encoded with as I'm making this move from Vista Ultimate (using VMC for TV) so it did not require much manual intervention. I plan on installing PowerDVD for Blu-ray/HD-DVD support as I have a BD/HDDVD combo drive in my HTPC; I assume this will cover me for the AVC/h.264 decoding then?

Thank you again for the help.
From this post it looks like DVB-T, even HD uses MPEG2 in Aus- are you using DVB-T or sat/cable? Anyhow if you need a decoder for h.264 you can use the PowerDVD decoder as long as it doesn't clash with SAF.

That's great news! Thanks for the tips on the dvd ripping. I have a few dvd's I've been unable to find HD downloads for.

HD rips from DVD? Are you joking? :)

Maybe that didn't make sense. For every dvd I own, I've been searching for the HD rip of the movie (like hddvd, bluray or hdtv) to put on my HTPC. A few I can't find in HD, so I can rip the SD dvd just to have it on the same htpc. I'm lazy and hate swapping dvd's. :)

I've spent quite a bit of time today reading a lot of these posts and threads about SAF.

I think it is a little clearer now, that SAF will enable DXVA and in turn improve (well, enable!) 1080p MKV playback on my hardware. It seems that this is due to the MPCVideoDec.ax codec.

My motherboard has an integrated ATI Radeon HD3200, with 128mb of DDR3 ram.

So far I have never been able to play 1080p MKV files on this hardware (using VLC, GOM, etc, WMP11 plays but without 5.1 audio and incorrect AR though very high CPU).

Is my understanding of SAF in my case correct?

Great! Thank you.

As I've mentioned, I'm new to MediaPortal and in turn new to SAF. So I must ask, when someone can spare the time, I'd appreciate a basic walk through process to get me up and running with MediaPortal and SAF. It would be a clean install of XP, drivers installed, windows up to date. I plan on using MediaPortal for terrestrial TV and all media playback (I'd install PowerDVD for Blu-ray/HDDVD physical media playback).

Sorry, I'm a noob and I want to be as prepared as possible.

I would start by reading the first page, Hoborg outlines the install and setup very well. Then if you have any issues, ask away! :)

Hi hoborg!

I have problems installing SAF 3.40.
I have a fresh Windows XP SP3 install (Hungarian) and installed Haali splitter and Mediaportal 1.0 final, but I get two errors when trying to install SAF 3.40.
The first says I have not installed MediaPortal, the second says, that I have not installed PowerDVD flter (but I did it).
Then I tried SAF 3.30 and installed without any error.
After that I tried to upgrade to v3.40, but the "MediaPortal not installed" error still comes up.

Can You help me?

As I can see there is no precompiled snapshot for v1.0 yet.

Yes, I placed the CLVsd.ax into c:\ and SAF 3.30 accepts it, but v3.40 don't.
