Did you configure the Video settings for the proper codes / decoders **AND** DVD settings in mediaplayer configuration?

For MPG2 I use the Cyberlink Codec, h264 is decodec by CoreAVC, all others are set to FFDshow. In FFDshow Audio the passthrough switches are set.
Maybe I should put GraphStudio between MP to see whats going on?

Hi all,

Finally I had the time for upgrading MP from 1.0.2 to 1.1.0 Beta 1. Also upgraded from SAF 3.47 to SAF 4.00RC1 (not unlocked, please can you tell me what to do?).
Made the usual upgrade sequence for MP, SAF and stuff. I use Vista Home Premium + HD3200 integrated + Catalyst 9.4. Never had a problem before, everything was working perfectly.

But now, I have a strange behaviour when starting a video. Not sure what the hell is causing it. When playback starts, and after 8-10 seconds, CPU suddendly loads to 100% and stays there for about 80-90 seconds (no relevant hard disk activity and the video is played correctly, no choppy and no audio problems during these moments), then after those 80-90 seconds, CPU load drops suddenly to stay fine.

It happens on every mkv, xvid, divx I tested (dozens of them). This cause the overheating of the system, as CPU core temp goes to 85º during the overload, then drop down to a good measure of 55-60º.

MP is configured exactly as Hoborg states in the main post.
I don't think is DXVA related, as after the 90-seconds-CPU-overload I get 1080p playback with 5-10% CPU load. More: It also happens when playing SD.
It's not post-processing related, as I don't have any postprocessing active. Also I deactivated the resize option on FFDshow Video, no luck.
I'm using SPDIF-out selected on FFDShow Audio Decoder. No matter if I don't use it, the same happens.

I want to remark: During the strange stress time, video playback is still perfect.

Anybody has a reason for this to happen and how to avoid it?

Ehm wouldn't you want to do something about that? 85 degrees full load is way to high for any CPU. And ofcourse it will get load sometime someday anyways, so before you burn it out... Especially that it gets so hot so fast is not that good. I would consider a second opinion on your cooling

Well, this extreme overheating only happens since I installed MP 1.01B1 + SAF 4.00RC1, which was... today.

Let me explain better: When I run MediaPortal, core temp is fine (45º). Browse menus etc, temp eventually raises to 50º.

BEFORE upgrading, playing a video was not a problem as core temp was on the 50-55º (no CPU overload). So everything was OK.

But AFTER upgrading, every time I play a video, CPU suddenly loads to 100% and stays there for 80-90 secs, so core temp go highquickly (even 85º I saw!!!). After that, suddenly drops to a logical CPU load (5-15%) and temp also drops instantly to the usual 55º-60º (a bit higher than before due to the remain overheating).

It's not a temperature issue. That is the consequence of the sudden CPU overload, which is the real problem.

It does not matter, at least not from my point of view.
In my opinion you check your PC temps when making the CPU (and maybe videocard, HDs) do full load. If the temps are fine then you do not need to change anything but as it appears yours are getting way to high full load.
The reason I think like this is because there will be (although maybe unlikely in your usage scenario) times that the CPU will have to put out full load for a long duration of time.
You can stress test your CPU (dual core test, run it twice for quads, thrice for hexa etc.) with Orthos
always do that with every PC that I get. Running it for 12 hours at least is recommended. This way I can check if my setup is holding out in extreme situations and if my newly bought CPU is not a defect. You'd be better save then sorry with all that hot and nice weather in spain ey

It's not a temperature issue. That is the consequence of the sudden CPU overload, which is the real problem.

It is a temp problem also in my opinion. Ok I did not address the problem you asked an answer for but I just wanted to warn you. No harm intended.

another solution you might want to look at is underclocking/undervolting the CPU (look @ rightmark's RMClock) to have it become less hot full load and also has the benefit of lesser power consumption!

Run the downloaded version you installed again and it will uninstall.
