Re: SAF v5.00 experimental (based on FFDShow DXVA decoder)

So resizing to get better picture quality as many guides on the web states have no effect? If that is true then there seems to be a lot of misinformation out there :)

Well, I'll turn resizing off then, and try to fiddle with some of the other settings to improve quality

Thank you for the answer.

Simple resize won't affect picture quality, you need to postprocess image after resize to "increase quality". SAF newer did this. It will also eat a lot of CPU power.

Re: SAF v5.00 experimental (based on FFDShow DXVA decoder)

hey all

I started using saf 5 after a fresh install, and i must say - i am very happy :) normally i would have configged
all elements and codecs myself. But this just works perfectly.

only one question, i used to use ac3 filter, in that filter i would volume up the rear channels in my 5.1 setup.
How would someone do this with the ffshow codec ? i looked in the audio config, but i cant find anything about volume.

The question is if you passthrough audio or not.

Video Quality Tested: GeForce Vs. Radeon In HQV 2.0

    Radeon or nVidia?

    ...Radeons earn a well-deserved win here :D

Off topic - we should really have a separate thread for this - but that testing is quite flawed in several areas if you think HD movies (it suits much better for SD / lower quality clips):

    • Skin tone correction - this is twisting the whole pciture into using wrong color shades. No one should ever use this at all. Movie studio professionals and the director are probably already picked up the correct colors to be used.
    • Edge enchanment - Again, to preserve the original video as intented it shouldn't be used at all (it will just create fake sharpness - anyone have seen few Blu-ray masterings that have been already
    • Noise reduction - this is a bit tie between use or not. It might be good to be used on some old movies on Blu-ray. But again the movie to BD process is already including this step and the movie studio professionals should pick up the correct amount of noise reduction (of course they could fail :)). But in that case you would be manually required to switch between the on/off based on the currently played movie since you don't want to be having that noise reduction running on properly mastered movies. So, this is small plus for ATI :)
    • Contrast Enhancement - Shouldn't be used at all - unless you are having some really bad (non calibrated) tv / projector.
    • Compression Artifacts - nothing to do with HD sourced material. Althou it is good for Youtube generation :)

When comparing the Nvidia's results between products is giving quite odd results. Looks like there could be some quite big issues in their current drivers on some of the latest HW (460 vs. 220 for example).

If you are after HD movies there is no real difference if in quality if you pick up AMD or Nvidia GPU. I would pick Nvidia from those two because 1) it has no flickering issue with MP (which AMD still hasn't been able to provide any information to us) 2) AMD's VPU has several flaws with decoding - this happens with minority of the content, but you can ask from MPC-HC devs what tehy think of the VPU and issues it has.

If you are mainly after SD (DVD even) content I would recommend to pick AMD card if you feel lucky that the flickering issue wont be happening on your HW combination.

    I passthrough SPDIFF the audio.

    I passthrough SPDIFF the audio.

...and that is the problem. If you want to change anything like volume level, you need to decode audio first. Passthrough mean send audio to external decoder as it is.

To do what you want mean:
Decode audio to PCM -> increase volume level on one of audio channel -> encode PCM to AC3 -> passthrough.

    hoborg

thanks for your reply, but would decode the audio mean -> maybe synch problems for the audio, and skip or ff in a movie might result in hikups in the video etc ?

because, i dont have those problems now, but i used to have them when i used ac3filter for the audio (and probably decoded the audio also)

oke, thanks for your help, at first i'll leave all SAF settings as it came installed.

Re: SAF v5.00 experimental (based on FFDShow DXVA decoder)

I run the january 19. build of SAF v5.0

I just noticed the other day that video does not resize even though it is activated in ffdshow. I don't know whether it is a new issue or not.
The OSD displays that input size and output size are the same.

I disable resizing, it was causing AR ratio fail under MediaPortal.

Resize is only enabled if FFDShow subtitle engine is enabled durning SAF setup for good looking subtitles.
Sorry Hoborg, probably I did not well understand because of my bad English.
With latest SAF release (i use an older version of SAF 5) resize in ffdshow don't works even if i manually active it in ffdshow ?

    Thanks

    correction: don't works ........
