Re: SAF v5.00 experimental (based on FFDShow DXVA decoder)

I run the january 19. build of SAF v5.0

I just noticed the other day that video does not resize even though it is activated in ffdshow. I don't know whether it is a new issue or not.
The OSD displays that input size and output size are the same.

I disable resizing, it was causing AR ratio fail under MediaPortal.

Resize is only enabled if FFDShow subtitle engine is enabled durning SAF setup for good looking subtitles.
Sorry Hoborg, probably I did not well understand because of my bad English.
With latest SAF release (i use an older version of SAF 5) resize in ffdshow don't works even if i manually active it in ffdshow ?

Thanks

 correction: don't works ........

Why? There is no reason why it should not work.
How SAF setup resize:
Durning SAF setup you answer to use FFDshow subtitle engine:
- yes - resize is on by default
- no - resize is off by default

Note: You can enable/disable resize anytime after SAF install, just make sure you enable it in correct ffdshow profile.

    Hi guys :)

Video Quality Tested: GeForce Vs. Radeon In HQV 2.0

    Radeon or nVidia?

    ...Radeons earn a well-deserved win here :D

Off topic - we should really have a separate thread for this - but that testing is quite flawed in several areas if you think HD movies (it suits much better for SD / lower quality clips):

    • Skin tone correction - this is twisting the whole pciture into using wrong color shades. No one should ever use this at all. Movie studio professionals and the director are probably already picked up the correct colors to be used.
    • Edge enchanment - Again, to preserve the original video as intented it shouldn't be used at all (it will just create fake sharpness - anyone have seen few Blu-ray masterings that have been already
    • Noise reduction - this is a bit tie between use or not. It might be good to be used on some old movies on Blu-ray. But again the movie to BD process is already including this step and the movie studio professionals should pick up the correct amount of noise reduction (of course they could fail :)). But in that case you would be manually required to switch between the on/off based on the currently played movie since you don't want to be having that noise reduction running on properly mastered movies. So, this is small plus for ATI :)
    • Contrast Enhancement - Shouldn't be used at all - unless you are having some really bad (non calibrated) tv / projector.
    • Compression Artifacts - nothing to do with HD sourced material. Althou it is good for Youtube generation :)

When comparing the Nvidia's results between products is giving quite odd results. Looks like there could be some quite big issues in their current drivers on some of the latest HW (460 vs. 220 for example).

If you are after HD movies there is no real difference if in quality if you pick up AMD or Nvidia GPU. I would pick Nvidia from those two because 1) it has no flickering issue with MP (which AMD still hasn't been able to provide any information to us) 2) AMD's VPU has several flaws with decoding - this happens with minority of the content, but you can ask from MPC-HC devs what tehy think of the VPU and issues it has.

If you are mainly after SD (DVD even) content I would recommend to pick AMD card if you feel lucky that the flickering issue wont be happening on your HW combination.

i own a radeon and a couple of nvidia,( and i had many radeon and many nvidia cards in the closer past)
may i say a word about this?

i totally agree with hoborg and with Tomshw.
    My point of view is:
specially for an HTPC the flexibility is the ke
If i want just use the htpc for watch BDs it became quite useless, much much better (and cheaper) a dedicated BD player.
The htpc have to manage at the best every kind of content.

so as you can read in the article: nvidia (by driver issue or not) is lacking of many features about pulldown detection and deinterlacing. :(
as you know , is very important to us the smoothness of the video...... not all the ppl use HTPC on tv or tv compatible frequency monitors and if you try to play a HDTV stream pal on a 60hz 27" samsung monitor those features are really important (as is written in the article) ;)

in my opinion i chose radeon for my HTPC because i use mediaportal with a wide range of contents, from onlinevideos, HDTV, SDTV, phone movies, etc .

i would spend a word also about software developing side, i'm not a coder, just a software quality enployee, but i don't see any strange issue with commercial video playing products or other Front ends , i know mpc-hc team seems still having troubles but there are other teams that didn't have the same issues. Maybe an architectural choice made in the past now reflects those kind of small issues on MP (i don't have much flicker using streamed on 1.2a), maybe also ati don't know how to fix this problem with MP ..... but i don't think it is a big issue , much better managing a good de-interlacing ;) 10 time unit watching tv just 0,1 time units watching osd menu :)

besides i agree with many enhancement of the ati driver are useless or worse .......

the best would be if someone can find a way to change them from the playing software, maybe automatically , maybe by remote control....... i'm wondering if there is a way to teach MP to understand when a kind of content is played and it can change the driver enhancement following some user rules.

    :D

    bye bye

Re: SAF v5.00 experimental (based on FFDShow DXVA decoder)

I am sorry if this has already been asked several times, but I am having issues getting my computer to play 1080P mkv's smoothly in Windows 7 64 bit. I just upgraded from Vista Business 32 bit, where I managed to get everything to play smoothly, but can't remember all the settings I had to do to get it. Currently the only thing I have installed on the computer is the latest version of MP, StreamMP, and SAF V5 unlocked. The video's play fine when I use windows media player, but not when I use MediaPortal. So I think it is a codec issue or not using the ATI hardware acceleration. Can you guys help me figure out what setting I should use, in MediaPortal, ffdshow, etc?

    Processor: AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual-Core 5000+ 2.6
Mother Board: GIGABYTE GA-MA78GM-S2H (780g chip set) using the on board video ATI HD3200
I installed the latest ATI drivers 11.1
    Memory: 2 GB

    Thanks for the help,
    Topp

Ugh, the last think i want to start is ATI VS nVidia flame war :)

    me neither ;)

could be a good start point of a new challenge for a brave coder ;)

Did you tryed to play your video in Graphstudio?

Please update OggSplitter.ax to latest v1.5.0.2910 and other missing filters.

    Hi.
I am now playing with BASS DS filter, working great here. It support a lot of audio formats:

    • Audio: AAC, ALAC, APE, FLAC, MP3, MPC, TTA, WV
    • Shoutcast: MP3, AAC, OGG
    • Tracker: MO3, IT, XM, S3M, MTM, MOD, UMX

If all be working, i will integrate it in to SAF - replace MadFLAC, MONOGRAM Musepack Decoder and OGG splitter.

BTW, anybody have some trackers (MO3, IT, XM, S3M, MTM, MOD, UMX) samples to test ?

This was more a container like avi. Perhaps the filter works for those as well.
