Could do with some help with this!
Every movie I play shows the main subtitles. Can somebody check what I am doing wrong - I have even disabled subtitles in the LAV splitter to try and see whats going on, but it still shows them! I can turn them off during the movie, no problem. I can also disable them in MePo.
Ideally, what I want, is only forced subs for English audio and English subs for all other audio language, but I can't seem to get this to work

In advanced, setting engff does nothing

Please help!

I think you can put: eng:eng|f, *:eng
* means "all".
The rules will always be parsed from left to right, the first match taking precedence. So it should work.

Actually, it seems this isn't quite what I want as I recently watched some .avis with .srt subtitles and despite the audio being english the subtitles auto-loaded. Perhaps the audio language isn't set at all though and therefore MP/LAV can't detect that it's english and this is why the subtitles are auto-loaded. How do I check what audio language is set for the .avi?

Subtitles are handled by FFDshow in SAF.
Good to see it how it works it to test directly in graphstudio (SAF tool) - drag and drop your movie in Graphstudio and hit play.
There is an option to display only forced subtitles durning SAF install.

So, you need to setup your MePo to handle subtitles corectly.[DOUBLEPOST=1342471950][/DOUBLEPOST]

Well, why you didnt mux your AVI + STR to MKV (use MKV merge) and tag tracks as you want?

I have reinstalled SAF and enabled ffdshow for subtitles

If I drag a file into Graphstudio, I get this:

However, if I connect to remote graph when playing the same file in MePo, I get this

Now, the second one looks better to me, as it is using the LAV decoders. However, no mention of ffdshow for the subtitles. I now find that some subtitles are working as expected and some dont display at all

What am I missing here?

It is becouse MPC-HC subtitle engine doesnot support all subtitles formats that FFDshow do.

It is good to remember that using ffdshow for subtitles will cause every video texture to be copied from GPU RAM to system RAM and back to GPU RAM. Also it will disable DXVA. ffdshow's DXVA support for subtitles is a hack and causes corrupted video frames and/or subtitle bitmaps on some context as it is modifying the data on reference video frames that are stored in the GPU memory. Those modified video reference frames then are used for decoding some future video frames and the path for the disaster is just waiting to happen.

No time. If I have to, I'll just toggle off the subtitles each time I play an .avi.

I am using it since it was introduced in FFDShow DXVA Video decoder. I read about such problems on some machines but i was newer been able to reproduce any image coruption. It is working just fine here.

It has been just good luck If reference frames that are in GPU are modified it will alter the decoding results.

I also had some strange things with this settings, and as my movies are all french or english audio only, I changed now to: "fre:fre|f,eng,fre" and it works better.
So the "*" doesn't seemed to work properly, or maybe it works now with latest SAF version but I have not tested it.
Of course if the audio or subtitles are not tagged correctly, it can not work properly.
