Well, thanks for your suggestions anyway.

My sistem was working perfectly fine, until I upgraded/installed SAF 6.2.1 - I had 6.2.0 and everyrthing was worknig perfectly and I didn't change anything. So, I still believe that SAF 6.2.1 broke my system.

in my opinion is about all the crap you installed in your system... on many clean system no one experienced your problems ;)

OK then since so many of you is pointing to the finger at my system, I'll give it a try and see if I can uninstall those codecs. I have no idea where they actually came from as I didn't install those codecs - I had to install Nero 7 as my DVD disc burning program, but had no idea it installed codecs etc. Same as for Hauppauge - I needed to install th Hauppauge drivers for my TV card but again wasn't aware it install so many codecs. I asked a simple question as to whether has anyone encountered similar issues but never expected to get bombarded - I sincerely thought 6.2.1 broke my sistem. The only "codecs" that I deliberately installed was SAF...

I do, however, sincerely thank each and everyone of you who took the time to answer my queries. I'll give those suggestions a try when I have some time to work on it.

    Thank you.

    Hi.
Yes, NERO is really dangerous package, it can take control over your system, especially the codecs. I am suggesting to you to uninstall it and use some small burning software like Astroburn (http://www.astroburn.com/). And if you install your Hauppauge - do not install any software, only the drivers! Check Hauppauge website for them. There are no codecs at all in them. Watch out for older PowerDVD too, especially version 7,8,9, they will mess your system in minute. New versions do not register the filters, so system will stay clean. You can still have problem after PDVD uninstall, becouse the uninstaller only delete the filters, but not clean the registry correctly. You can check it in graphstudio, there will be red ! near broken filter, if there is a problem in registry. SAF installer is capable to fix some of them, but not all, there are too many filters combinations...

I'm setting up a system for my brother and I'm trying to ensure he's got all the apps he needs so that he's not tempted to download and install one of these things that installs a load of codecs or whatever and messes things up.

    So far I'm looking at

    For general DVD Burning:
    StarBurn Free http://www.starburnsoftware.com/products/starburn/overview
    InfraRecorder http://infrarecorder.org/
    BurnAware Free http://www.burnaware.com/burnaware_free.html
    AstroBurn Lite http://www.astroburn.com/products/abLite
    Ashampoo Burning Studio Free https://www.ashampoo.com/en/usd/pin/0710/Burning_Software/Ashampoo-Burning-Studio-6
    CDBurnerXP http://cdburnerxp.se/en/home
    IMGBurn http://www.imgburn.com/

    For video to DVD/authoring:
    DVD Styler http://www.dvdstyler.org/en/
    DVD Flick http://www.dvdflick.net/
Free Video to DVD Converter http://www.koyotesoft.com/video-software/free-videos-to-dvd.html

    For general conversion:
    ffmpeg and Winff http://www.ffmpeg.org/ http://winff.org/html_new/
Handbrake (probably a bit confusing for him though!) http://handbrake.fr/

    For DVD/CD Ripping:
    DVD Shrink http://www.dvdshrink.org/what_en.php
    Exact Audio Copy http://www.exactaudiocopy.de/

It would be great if anyone knows which of those are/aren't "safe" in terms of messing up things.

Obviously I'm not planning on installing all of those for him. He's used to Nero, IMGBurn and DVD Shrink. IMGBurn is great but not very user-friendly for burning audio/video to disc, so he only uses that for burning ISOs and Nero for most else, so hopefully one of those apps in the first list will cover all his simple audio/video burning, with the apps in the second list for more advanced/tricky tasks.

He'll also need a youtube downloader. Currently he's using one of these all-in-one suites he downloaded, DVDVideoSoft I think http://www.dvdvideosoft.com/ , for that and converting/burning audio/video files which Nero doesn't like but god knows what that installs so I don't want to put that on his new system.

In the past I've used a Firefox addon for youtube downloading, which worked well but as he uses IE he'll probably find it a bit annoying have to fire up Firefox every time he sees a video he wants to download.

I seem to have a problem, as DVD Navigator is greyed out under DVD Discs codec settings, so I can't select it as shown in the first post.

Never come across this problem before on my other PCs.

I've also been having a problem with sound not starting with LiveTV and it coming on after maybe 10s. It only seems to happen the first time I start watching (maybe the first time after wake from standby). I'm using ffdshow Audio Processor to do Post Processing on TV Audio (just the Volume Normalisation) and added ffdshow Audio Processer first but then when Filter Properties button didn't work I figured that must be the wrong one and added ffdshow Audio Decoder. I've got that unticked now though (there's no way to actually remove it from the list) as I think only the Processor is needed, it's just a bit weird that you can't open the Properties to set it up.
