I've noticed that the "show lyrics" in the visualization options of the Now playing tab in Music configuration is greyed. Why is this?

Because there is no integrated way to Show Lyrics.
The button was there placed for future use.
If you want to show lyrics, you need to use the MYLyrics Plugin.

I see, thanks for your answer. I downloaded MyLyrics plugin and learning to use it now.. Seems very promising..

The only changes I see are: Updated Marcel Groothuis version of the plugin to now support Media Portal 2.5
