Some video recording have no sound with Windows Mediaplayer (1 Viewer)

I realized that some video recordings have no sound when played with the Windows own Mediaplayer (Win7). On the other hand using VLC to play the video works fine.

I usually watch the recordings via an external hardware (Samsung BluRay recorder with USB input). And exactly these recordings with problem in the Windows Mediaplayer also have no sound on that external device.

I am no pro, so please excuse... I assume the problem is the audio codec... But where/how can I customize or at least check the recorded files for different settings in that area.

Any hints are appreciated.

I would expect that there is some unsupported audio format (AAC for example is used in DVB, but it is not part of the blu-ray standard). Play the recording in MediaPortal and check the used audio format in tsreader.log (or post the log into forum so someone can tell what format is used).

The holidays have made me forget about that problem... Nevertheless it's not solved yet. With your suggestion I tried to play two different recordings within MP and saved the tsreader.log.

Please note: The problem is that Windows Mediaplayer doesn't output the sound. Using another player e.g. VLC or MP itself are working fine. The problem is that I am copying the recordings to an USB stick and us that file on an external device (in that case a Samsung Bluray HD recorder with an USB interface for external sources). There the mentioned files have no sound.

OK to make the whole story short. Attached are the logs for both recordings.

I would be really happyif someone could help me in that case.

Both audio formats should be supported by WMP and normal Blu-ray player. No clue why they don't work properly.

I will try Samsung support and see if there is any chance to fix that. OTOH I am already "old" enough to not bet on that happening soon. Normal way in our industry is that such a feature is implemented in the next generation model

It is a bit weird that WMP wont play correctly those files. It should support both audio formats as well. Is it some specific TV channel that has the issue? Maybe they aren't having 100% compliant stream and some player will fail because of that.

I agree it is strange - the only thing I could think of is maybe certain codecs that can't handle the format or certain stream characteristics are installed and set with high merit so that WMP uses them instead of the default Microsoft codecs.

Might be worthwhile running filmerit (see sig) to see if any filter errors show up, if they do, then unlock padlock, accept agreement and press big red button to fix.

What you did not say is if you have or had in the past, installed any form of codec pack, these can really screw things up, the only one's we can recommend are the LAV filters available from the MP desktop extensions installer, or supplied with the Onlinevideo's plugin.

Hi,

i realized that the sound problem is only effected on certain channels (ORF1, 3Sat, ARD, BR, ZDF) while on others (ServusTV, HDSuisse, ARTE) it works fine. But I have one film which was transmitted on ZDF (which normally doesn't work) which is fine ... Funny.

I have also downloaded the mentioned Filmerit software to check the filters. It gave no errors.

BTW, I double checked it on another Windows 7 installation. Trying it on another WinXP was not possible because the WMP installed there doesn't even know *.ts file. At least the other Win7 machine is more or less "standard" with no exotic programs installed. Mine is a software development machine setup up approx 18 months ago but with no problems so far.

Let me mention it again. I can use VLC to circumvent the problem with no sound, when playing the file on the computer. But - and that is new - some not all - recording which doesn't have a sound within WMP also have that problem when played on the external Samsung recorder (using USB as an input). Samsung support (no surprise) was "not really helpfull" in that case.

When TV Server makes a recording it writes the stream from the tuner to the HDD with no changes. For that reason, if you have problems playing the recordings in WMC then it is likely that it is because the codecs or splitter that WMC is using have some problem with the stream format. The audio format is controlled by the channel broadcasters. VLC uses internal decoding libraries to split and decode the video and audio - the fact that both VLC and MP can play the recordings indicates that there is no problem with the recordings themselves. It is a problem with the splitter and decoder (codec) that WMC is using. My understanding is that WMC uses the codecs with the highest merit/prioirty in the system that are registered as being able to decode a particular format. You can use filmerit to increase or decrease the merit/priority of codecs. My only suggestion to you is to try that - boost the priority of the codec that works in MP. If that doesn't work then try installing a different splitter (haali, LAV etc.).
