What tools do you use for skin modding?

Hi all,

just another question: what tools do you use for modding skins?

I have a vanilla XML editor, but his doesn't satisfy me very much ;-)

Do I need to install Visual Studio for this?!? (hope not )

How do you test if your modded xml files look good? Do you restart MP everytime you make a change? Or is there an easier way to preview changes?

And last but not least: is there a small modding tutorial? I mean most of the xml in the skin files is self-explanatory, but some things I don't really understand, e.g. what does the "50" in <onleft>50</onleft> exactly mean?

definitely no visual studio needed. all you need is notepad. i use editplus because it makes things a little easier to read.

yes, i just restart MP to test the changes. i don't think there's an easier way.

50 = 50 pixels. x is horizontal, y is vertical.

Hi chimbochoc,

To edit the skin, I use the free Notepad++ editor and to test the changes, I use a plugin called "Refresh" . It enables you to make changes to your skin and just reload it without having to exit MP each time. You will find it here.

I don't know of any modding tutorial but you can find some useful skin development information in the MediaPortal Wiki.

And, sorry ftothe3, but <onleft>50</onleft> means when the user clicks the left button, set the focus to the control which ID is 50 (each control has an ID number). The same goes for onright, onup and ondown.

I didnt' use it until now, but after restructuring my basic home menu I changed some plugins from basic home to plugins.

It looks a bit messed up. I guess this is not how it's supposed to look? For example arcsoft player is invisible. I can select and start it, but there is no logo or text. Any idea what I can do about it?

Have you applied any mods to your skin? I have had something similar happen after applying a mod in the past. Also try clearing your cache.

I applied some mods for basic homescreen and moving pictures. I already cleared cache several times.

When I switch back from details view to the list view in moving pictures, I always start at the top of the list instead of of at the movie where i just watched the details from. Does someone know how i can fix this?
