When I reboot, I get media service encountered a problem and when I try running mediacntre I get strong name validation failed.

I've trried several fixes but nothing work.

    Uninstalling and reinstalling SP3.

Installed net framework sp1.1 and running c:\windows\ehome\medctrro.exe /o/p RunOnce

Installed net framework 3.5 and running this suggestion -

    Close Media Center
Click on the Start menu, choose run and type cmd
    Type: regsvr32.exe atl.dll
    Type: cd \windows\ehome
    Type: ehSched /unregServer
    Type: ehSched /service
    Type: ehRecvr /unregServer
    Type: ehRecvr /service
    Type: ehRec.exe /unregServer
    Type: ehRec.exe /regserver
    Type: ehmsas.exe /unregServer
    Type: ehmsas.exe /regserver
    Restart Media Center

But it fails on first command.

I still cannot run window MediaCentre.

    I have not installed MediaPortal.

I would like to continue with MediaPortal and get some media functionality back. All else fails I'll go back to running MediaPortal on Windows 7.

In the meantime, one question - what should I do about Mediaplayer 11
It won't install on MCE2005 without a fix that breaks Mediacentre.
The Mediaportal wiki says MediaPortal runs on MCE2005 straight out of the box yet the install stumbled at this point the last time I tried. and had to manually install it to get it on the PC otherwise MediaPortal would not work?

    Found this fix -

This is an alternate solution for all of you who are still experiencing the "Strong name validation" error after reregistering the MCE services and reinstalling .NET Framework 1.1sp1
    Requirements :
You have upgraded your Windows XP MCE 2005 to SP3
You have an error everytime you try running ehshell.exe
You have tried the other solutions in this forum (unregister and register services + reinstall .NET Framework 1.1)
You will do this at your own risk :p
    Necessary software :
You will need the following update packages from Microsoft
    NDP1.1sp1-KB867460-X86.exe (Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 SP1)
    WindowsXPMediaCenter2005-KB900325-usa.exe (MCE 2005 Rollup 2 Standalone)
    WindowsXPMediaCenter2005-KB925766-ENU.exe (MCE Oct 2006 Rollup)
    Process:
Start by reinstalling Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 SP1
Open regedit and go to HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Media Center\
Change the value of Ident to 3.0
Extract the contents of WindowsXPMediaCenter2005-KB900325-usa.exe using winrar
In the bin directory, run KB900325.exe
Once this update is installed, do not restart your computer.
    Run WindowsXPMediaCenter2005-KB925766-ENU.exe
    Restart your computer
Addiotional Step (Thank you uskiwi for pointing this out)
If you are experiencing error messages in Media Center talking about component registration errors, you may follow the steps indicated by uskiwi below or use the MCERepair tool available at :
    http://blogs.msdn.com/peterrosser/archive/2005/10/21/483723.aspx

    Final notes :
This should force Windows to reapply and reinstall Rollup2 and the Oct2006 update leaving you with a functionnal Media Center.
I also noticed that SP3 breaks the drivers for my WinTV PVR150. If you have such a card, there might be some mokeying around to do with the drivers for it to work again. I do not have a tutorial ready for that yet though.

Which fixed MediaCentre but TV cards are not recognised.[DOUBLEPOST=1342972702][/DOUBLEPOST]When I try re-installing TV cards I get error -

WMDRMSDK.dll not found. Try re-installing the program that uses it.

I'm not sure what program that is.

Leaving it for a bit now.

Do I need to install Media Player 11 to get mediaportal to work?

    Not a MediaPortal bug no.

Its definitely an MCE2005 with SP3 bug.

Looking at your requirements, I cannot install mediaPortal without SP3 and MP11 when Media player 11 is not compatible with MC2005 and SP3 introduces a bug that prevents MCE2005 Media Centre from working and this appears to cause MediaPortal to stop working.

So is there a way to use MediaPortal on MCE2005 without Service Pack 3 or Media Player 11?[DOUBLEPOST=1343165380][/DOUBLEPOST]
    get windows 7 ..its better

Cheers, I know its good. I was using it on Win7 but my motherboard is really only XP compatible. Its only a media centre PC for TV and video's and music. MediaPortal is great, much better than MediaCentre but I did have a few bugs (mpei install notification in a never ending loop, picture judders) so a reinstall was necessary and if its compatible, I may as well run XP MCE2005 with mediaportal and upgrade my windows XP PC which has a DVBs2 card and a Win7 compatible motherboard.

But it seems, Service Pack 3 creates a windows bug, which prevents media centre and media portal TV cards from working. Hence I either need a fix or SP3 to not be installed to run MediaPortal.

I suppose I could put XP on the MediaCentre PC.... Just thought of that.

Compatible motherboard? Never heard of that before. Possibly u mean the motherboard will run win7 slowly? It will run win7 as long as u have 512mb of ram regardless of your other hardware.

Yes basically. It is an XP motherboard with only XP drivers available, but it runs Win& and I have used XP and Vista drivrs. But I had a few bugs and needed a re-install anyway. If I'm not using Win& mediacantre, there's no point running Win7 when i could use it on another PC.

Besides its fun trying and I've progressed![DOUBLEPOST=1343179033][/DOUBLEPOST]I've uninstalled DivX codec and conveter, unistalled Hauppauge TV card drivers with removal tool, reinstalled
and get driver install error and windows media centre does not recognise TV cards as present. Driver install
    fails with WMDRM error.
Unistalled Power DVD and all software associated, unistalled reinstalled TV drivers.
Still get errors, cards not recognised by MCE2005 Media Centre, error installing drivers relating to WMDRM
    above.
Uninstalled Nero express (bundled with powerDVD) reinstalled TV card drivers, uninstalled ffdshow reinstalled
TV card. Still get TV card install errors and TV cards not recognised by windows media centre software.
    Cannot configur TV signal.
Installed newer version of TV card drivers from Win7 TV, I had been using WinTV 4.6. Same result, drivers not
installed due to missing WMDRM file.
Went to auto updates, media player 11 for MCE is available in software option. Downloaded and installed
ignored 114 security updates in high priority. After reboot, started mediacentreand got through menu to
configure TV signal - cards recognised. Then got -
    component registration error.
Some of the files needed to play Radio or Video are missing or corrupt.
Media Centre component registration may have failed.
NowI have Media Player 11 I can install MediaPortal!
I uninstalled reinstalled TV card drivers - no install errors. Restarted and run Media Centre - same component
    registration error.
I've reinstalled powerDVD, DivX and FFDshow.
Installed MediaPortal, single seat on E drive partition, install without error or Media Player 11 missing.
Scanned TV signal UK all regions, found channels. But get 'No Free Tuner' error when trying to select a channel. Media centre does not work on TV either. Component registration error.
    Tried this suggestion -

    Close Media Center
Click on the Start menu, choose run and type cmd
    Type: regsvr32.exe atl.dll
    Type: cd \windows\ehome
    Type: ehSched /unregServer
    Type: ehSched /service
    Type: ehRecvr /unregServer
    Type: ehRecvr /service
    Type: ehRec.exe /unregServer
    Type: ehRec.exe /regserver
    Type: ehmsas.exe /unregServer
    Type: ehmsas.exe /regserver
    Restart Media Center

All commands went through ok. Started mediacentre and it is now scanning channels!

    MediaCentre TV now works!

MediaPortal still gives 'No Free Card Available' when selecting 'TV On' or in the EPG guide and selecting channel there. I have mapped the channels and selected which guide data to store. TV server Host name is in MediPortal configuration. I haven't fiddled with set up and settings yet.

oops, in channel mapping I took out the channels I wanted and left the unwanted, then when I select on guide, the channe isn't mapped. Now channels mapped correctly and selecting channel from guide works, but no video, only audio.

This morning I uninstalled MediaPortal to then try reinstalling it and Media Centre TV stopped working with Decoder not found Error.
Tried reinstalling MediaPortal but it kept failing at TV server plugin install, it just kept hanging. Media Centre not working with missing decoder error.

I uninstalled all programs, MP, PowerDVD, FFD, DivX etc and run CCleaner registry fix several times. I formatted C, retaining the partition info and deleted, remade and full format C drive (no reboots). Reinstalled MCE2005, turned off auto updates in the set up.Installed motherboard drivers, directX, service packs 2 & 3 selected no to auto update and Net Framework 1, 2, 3. (I also need 3.5) I activated windows, went to microsoft update, installed latest activex and then validation update. I selected custom instal and the scan offered me Net Framework 3.5 which had to be installed seperately. Looking at the optional software there was no Media Centre updates or Media Player 11 available.

I rebooted and went back to update site, I selected custom install, from available updates I deselected all then selected all updates for Windows XP, any of the Net Framework including security updates but did not select any security updates or IE8. I installed 24 updates in total, 136Mb. Rebooted. Back to update and installed optional software updates.

    I followed these instructions. -

You will need the following update packages from Microsoft
    NDP1.1sp1-KB867460-X86.exe (Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 SP1)
    WindowsXPMediaCenter2005-KB900325-usa.exe (MCE 2005 Rollup 2 Standalone)
    WindowsXPMediaCenter2005-KB925766-ENU.exe (MCE Oct 2006 Rollup)
    Process:
Start by reinstalling Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 SP1
Open regedit and go to HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Media Center\
Change the value of Ident to 3.0
Extract the contents of WindowsXPMediaCenter2005-KB900325-usa.exe using winrar
In the bin directory, run KB900325.exe
Once this update is installed, do not restart your computer.
    Run WindowsXPMediaCenter2005-KB925766-ENU.exe
    Restart your computer

I had to search for the individual updates and validate my OS to download them. Installed them, second update seems to reinstall MCE2005 Media Centre. Restarted as instructed.

Then I went back to windows update. Deselected all security updates, checked in optional software and found Media centre update roll up and Mediaplayer 11 for MCE (I tried using standalone installer on previous install but it fails saying wrong OS) I updated those 2 updates. 115 Security updates left to install and a few optional hardware

    Then I followed these instructions

Click on the Start menu, choose run and type cmd
    Type: regsvr32.exe atl.dll
    Type: cd \windows\ehome
    Type: ehSched /unregServer
    Type: ehSched /service
    Type: ehRecvr /unregServer
    Type: ehRecvr /service
    Type: ehRec.exe /unregServer
    Type: ehRec.exe /regserver
    Type: ehmsas.exe /unregServer
    Type: ehmsas.exe /regserver
    Restart Media Center

Restarted and defragmented C drive, rebooted and set system restore point.

Installed antivirus and earlier on winrar.

I have not been prompted at each reboot to click user icon to log in, I think installing all Net Frameworks one after the other prevented this, so I will not install tweakui, I have my partitions and since I left them in place at the beginning of the process my second partition is labelled D: and my DVD drive is E: Last time, they were opposite way round (I think I remember why)

I did not install BDA/DVB Hotfix because install guide says 'It is already included in roll up 2 of Windows MCE 2005'
    I mapped network drive.

Quick break before I install TVCard driver, Power DVD, DivX, FFDshow and AC3. Run windows media centre set up and configur TV signals.

Then install MediaPortal from the files I kept for this whole installation on the partitioned E; drive that is now the D: drive. and install MediaPortal to the D: drive as per the instructions. Using the main download that is I presume the deploy tool as it downloads and installs everything.

Should I install the SQL server to the D: drive as well as Media Portal?

I decided not to bother configuring media centre, the object was to get mediaportal on.

I installed WinTVv7 driver package with no install errors. Rebooted and installed PowerDVD, DivX codec AC3 and FFDshow. I installed MediaPortal from the D: drive partition to the D: drive partition where I have held a copy from previous attempt of all the needed files, drivers etc. I installed SQL to default C program files.

I started media portal config but did not get asked for database password. Set up and scanned video folder, imported fan art.

I started TV config and scanned channels, mapped channels, set epg grabber. Shutdown, connected my other internal hard drives, rebooted, run tv config again, specified record folder on new drive, imported old recordings into database. Then shutdown, wife wants to watch something on TV. I've done everything but try it!

It didn't work. I tried every filter. Same symptoms, audio but no video, no error message though. Switch TV off using mouse and go back to homepage still full functionality. I checked my CD's and I have 2 other versions of PowerDVD so I uninstalled and reinstalled a different version, set mediaportal codec to new codec and it works, TV is fine! (so does media centre TV)

    Cool.

I've now configured everything, installed skins. It all works on default wide skin but TV does not work on other skins. Same issue, can hear the audio but not see any video and the pc kind of locks, remote and mouse unresponsive.

The live TV stutters occasionaly, but it is a new install so downloading fanart etc in the background.

I've read I should excempt mediaportal folders from antivirus scan and seen some reference to nVidia stuttering issue.

I am using an old version of graphics driver but I think it has some Mheg functionality that was later dropped.

The MCE remote green button works but again I don't feel I have full functionality or responsiveness from it like I did before on MP and Win7.
