I guess the confusing part for new starters is that Mediaportal does not really supply any codecs (except for MPV / MPA for MPEG 2) whereas products like PowerDVD come bundled with all the codecs they need to operate.

I think it was mentioned elsewhere, but you don't have to buy PDVD. Just install the trial and copy the video filters directory out to somewhere safe and you can use the codecs that way.

Thanks, but I understand you can use MPC-HC as codec so why bother installing PowerDVD/using the PowerDVD codecs? MPC-HC has hardware support for video files so the only difference is PowerDVD also enables hardeware support for TV?

MPC-HC has hardware support (DXVA) for h.264 and VC-1, not for xvid and mpeg2. Is this the same with PowerDVD?

I haven't bought my TV card yet (will be a FloppyDTV DVB-T) and I am not sure I will. most channels have a website where you can select and view broadcasted shows. Only series and movies you cannot select but there are better ways to watch them instead of following them on tv anyway.

hello everybody, i am a newb to all of this and i specifically registered to media portal for two reasons..

    1. i would like to become an ace at using this product (i am becoming aware that it is very hard to)
    2. this thread caught my eye

    So here is the scoop...

    my htpc...
    gigabyte ga-ma78gm-s2h w/ amd athlon 64 x2 5000+ 2.6ghz
    hauppauge wintv-hvr-2250 dual tv tuner
    2 gigs of ram

using chipset version 8.522 with ccc 8.5

    here is the problem...
when i am in ccc and i let let smoothvision use application settings and then i go watch hd tv in media portal....it will run smooth for about 10 seconds and then it will crash (meaning picture freezes while sound is still broadcasting)

if i manually configure smoothvision and then go and watch HDTV through MP i get a black screen with sound.

NOTE: this is using vga only. once i get it all set up i will switch to hdmi.... also, i tried 8.9 drivers and i couldnt get that to work either, it did the same thing. although i didnt look into it too much....

    where do i start?????
    thanks!

    hi fshgrind,

please ad your rig specs in "my sytem" via "user cp" for better support. HDTV needs a HD ready or full hd screen which is hdcp compliant.
switch to hdmi, with vga noch chance to see HDTV content. change to ccc 8.10.
my display setup is set to 24Hz, that works.

    best.

OK, you have a very similar setup to me (same mobo, cpu, and vga)...I have had some trouble with MP but I did get it to work with Cyberlink PDVD codecs for MPEG2 and h.264/AVC HD without hardware acceleration (DXVA). My Catalyst settings (none of which were changed by me) are as follows -

    3D:
    Standard settings: use custom settings
    Anti-aliasing: use application settings
    Adaptive anti-aliasing: not ticked
    Anisotropic filter: use application settings
    Catalyst A.I.: not ticked (enabled)
    Mipmap detail level: performance
Wait for vertical refresh: always off (performance)
Direct3D settings: support DXT texture formats- ticked, alternate pixel center- not ticked
Open GL settings: triple buffering- not ticked, force 24-bit Z-buffer depth- not ticked

    Avivo video:
    Presets: use application settings
    Basic color: use application settings
    Basic quality: use automatic deinterlacing
Windows media settings: Windows media video acceleration- not ticked

If anyone can see anything that might not be right here please point it out.:D

It is not true that you cannot see HD using VGA- it works fine on my setup - admittedly I don't have 24hz but a lot of HDTVs don't have that either.

Hi, I'm running XP SP3 and a pre release version of the 8.10 which is 8.541 driver - I think the official 8.10 release is 8.551. There is actually 8.11 just out but some people seem to have had problems with it so I wouldn't risk it yet.

I think you should be able to play an HD file on any monitor but you won't be able to take advantage of the full HD resolution unless it equals or exceeds 1280x720 for 720p or 1920x1080 for 1080i/p.

Here's the old Catalyst driver archive - 8.10 should be fine- downlad from that link and also download and install Driver Sweeper or Driver Cleaner if you don't have these (don't run yet).

Run the ATi software uninstall utility in control panel> add/remove programs - restart (it may do it automatically) see if there is something called DAO in control panel- if there is remove it. Then restart in safe mode (F8 on startup) run driver sweeper - remove ATi graphics. Restart and then install the 8.10 package.
