Try different codecs, ffdshow perhaps? Check that you dont have post-processing or deinterlacing on.

You should be able to run MP over a wireless network without too much trouble. I was able to stream Divx, .TS, and TV to one of my Tv clients using just 802.11g with AES encryption enabled. I recommend that you run Vista (or Windows 7) since SMB2.0 is much better at recovering from brief network outages on a wireless network.
DivX movies plays fine without any problems and so does .TS files. These files are either 480p/480i and 1080i. Tv does studder a bit but I don't get any dropped packets!

I don't know about MP2 but as you said you tried MP1 too, how is the MP music config ?
MP(1) will only use LAV if you select "Internal DirectShow player" as music output, but then you lose gapless playback.
If you you don't have multichannel music you can choose WASAPI as the output and set the number of speakers to stereo.

maybe setting loglevel to debug might pinpoint the difference between normal and stuck?
Preferable with as much disabled as possible
also try to see if anything is happening during stuck for the mediaportal process(resource monitor, disk activity, cpu usage, anything)
