If I recall, the logfiles do look very different when EVR is enabled. If you use Vsfilter, it will show VMR9 as the renderer, but Haali's splitter correctly reports that is EVR is used.

The blacks are much deeper when EVR is used. Just start a film with black bars above and below. When you use EVR, those bars sort of disappear in very dark scenes. When using VMR9, you will see the bars as distinctly black, whereas the dark areas of the film are clearly brighter than the bars.

Eabin: Have you already had time to have a closer look at my problem?

Yesterday evening, MediaPortal crashed immediately (without any stutter, I was just changing the channel). The error message in error.log is similar to the one I usually get (but slightly different though and it's only there once):

Code:
2007-12-07 21:09:56.470412 [ERROR][11]: PlaneScene: re-entrancy in presentimage
2007-12-07 21:24:34.715412 [ERROR][14]: render exception:System.NullReferenceException: Der Objektverweis wurde nicht auf eine Objektinstanz festgelegt.
   bei MediaPortal.GUI.Library.GUIAnimation.Render(Single timePassed)
   bei MediaPortal.GUI.Library.GUITVProgressControl.Render(Single timePassed)
   bei MediaPortal.GUI.Library.GUIControl.DoRender(Single timePassed, UInt32 currentTime)
   bei MediaPortal.GUI.Library.GUIWindow.Render(Single timePassed)

I attached the log files, except vmr9.log (more than 40MB) - please tell me if you need that file or maybe a specific extract.

[Edit]Really attached the files...[/Edit]

Thanks for your help,
Sven

Few minutes ago I've updated Vista with Service Pack 1 Release Candidate.

Evr.DLL ha been updated to 6.0.6001.17052 version.

Evr tearing problem without Aero ON seems work fine now. no tearing at all

I've used the same scene of an episode of Eureka mkv avc1/x.264

with 5.0.1.1 version the original one evr work fine with Aero ON but with a lot of tearing without
    Aero active.

For me this a very good news.

edit: note work correct using 25 material with 50 Hz. refresh rate . no tearing. better than last evr.
using 24 fps with 60 Hz. refresh rate I got tearing yet. no tearing with aero

Actually VMR9 and EVR have both similar black level from technical point of view. If VMR9 shows blacks that aren't back (i.e. gray) then it just means that display adapters driver isn't using the correct color space setting.

Just wanted to add my experience enabling the EVR option using Vista. Not only do I notice a much deeper/richer color and picture but it also removed another issue I spent afew days on trying to figure out. When running with the VMR9 option (exlusive mode) everytime I played a movie or ended a movie I would see a quick flash of my desktop on the screen before the media portal screen was again viewable. Now that Im using the EVR option I no longer have that graphic glitch and was wondering if other users also had this improvement?

Thanks again for such a great product....

BTW the only issue I've seen with using EVR over VMR9 is that when seeking forward or backward with mkv's it will take 2 secs or so for the sound/video to sync up. This of course is probably due to the higher cpu load the EVR places on the system over the VMR9 option.

    Red,

Yes I have aero enabled as others in this thread recommend it to prevent tearing.

The blacks are much deeper when EVR is used. Just start a film with black bars above and below. When you use EVR, those bars sort of disappear in very dark scenes. When using VMR9, you will see the bars as distinctly black, whereas the dark areas of the film are clearly brighter than the bars.

Using the latest non beta drivers for my 8500gt and just media portal installed with ffdshow I also notice richer colors and darker blacks when I switched from VMR9 to EVR using vista. How would one go about checking what color space setting the 8500gt is using when in vmr9 mode?

edit: Just an update I found the settings in ffdshow to adjust colorspace settings and none offered the same type of rich color and dark blacks as EVR does.

    thanks

    yes , uncertainty
Confirm I've not tearing with Aero ON. But Aero is so heavy and I got a bit of stuttering with Aero ON.

ps: with Zoom Player there'is no tearing also without evr. So I think it's possible use evr without Aero. I hope for this in a future for MP (the best one :D )

When Im home later I will try my setup with aero disabled. The other option you can try is to always enable vsync under your 3d settings (at least for nvidia).
