How to Configure Winamp Visualisations as of 08.10.2010 (With MP 1.2)

This thread grew over the past and there's a lot of confusion how to use Winamp Visualisations.
I have just commited a few changes to SVN, which are updating the BASS libraries including BassVis, which is responsible for rendering the Music Visualisations.

So how to make a Winamp Visualisation work?

If you look at the Winamp install folder, you will notice that all plugins, including visualisations are stored in a sub folder named Plugins.
Unfortunately some of the Winamp Vis, like the popular Milkdrop rely on this hard coded folder to search for their Ini files.

So having the Vis in the MusicPlayer\plugins\visualizations\ folder, like we did until now, will cause troubles, as some of you have noticed in this thread.
So the solution is to store the Vis also in a folder named Plugins, which is a sub folder to the main executing program's, Mediaportal.exe, root folder.

Within MediaPortal, we have already this sub folder, which is used for all MediaPortal Plugins.
You simply need to copy the Vis dll and all other required files into the Plugins folder residing in the MediaPortal root folder.

Don't create any subfolders, besides that, which a vis might require.

e.g. for Milkdrop2 copy vis_milk2.dll and the "Milkdrop2" subfolders from the Winamp Plugins folder to the <mp-install-dir>\Plugins folder.

Configuration.exe will pick it up from there and show it in the listbox of the config dialog.
If you don't find any Winamp Vis, then you might not have copied them into the Plugins folder as instructed above.

This change is already effective in SVN and will be part of the first 1.2.0 public builds.

    Old Version of first Post:

I've just commited support for Winamp Visualisations.

    Yes, you can run Milkdrop

Working nice, with just a few problems remaining:

    - Cover Art fliping and Trackinfo overlay in Fullscreen is not working
Need to work on that, but most probably due to the way winamp plugins render, it'll be not possible

    - Song Title not displayed by the Plugin

    - Mouse Clicks and Keyboard input not working
I'm still working on it. The main mp window, steals my keyboard input

    - Some plugins, like Animator 2 and Tripex 3, don't detect that the Play status
I have this working in a test app, so it's a matter of debugging

    So how will it work.

    Put the plugin files into:
    <mp install dir>\Musicplayer\\plugins\visualizations

sub folders are ok. i have a subdir called "Sonique" and "Winamp" for separation.
They should appear then on Configuration and can be selected as any other vis type.

Over the next weeks, i'll try to sort out the remaining problems.

please let me know which plugins you found working and which are making problems.

    thx,

    Helmut

Very happy to see that you're reaching results.
I've quickly tried latest SVN and copied from WinAmp Plugin vis_milk.dll, its folder and .ini files.
Started configuration.exe and the pluging has been shown.
Selecting it I've a warning from the plugin and, I think, a error message from configuration.exe (it's in you language) that can't be started.
So, until now, I've not really tested nothing.
Logs attached, thanks for you work.

EDIT: tried again with the dll linked below and works, works, works !
    Everything as described !
I will try other plugs tomorrow !
Thank you so much Helmut !

    Hi,

this is a great idea. I have managed to get some to work. But others like beatharness (winamp version) don't work. When selected in MP config, it says you must have music playing for the visualisation to work. Any ideas how to get round that?

    Keep up the great work!

    Cheers,
    Colin

But they should work, when you play them inside MP.
Funny, it seems i was only testing plugins not having this problem.

Seems i need to create some dummy music stream and send a play command to it, before starting render

Sorry, should have mentioned that previously.
For Milkdrop you need to get 1.05beta6, which is a fixed version compatible with Winamp 5.
    grab it from here.
replace you vis_milk.dll and it'll work.

hwahrmann you are making some excellent progress with Music in Mediaportal, thank you so much. I can't wait to try out Milkdrop once I setup my house again (moved this weekend).

where do I put the presets ? *.milk

thx for the great work hwahrmann
in a directory named "Milkdrop", which is in the same subfolder as the vis_milk.dll.

    for example:
    ....\MusicPlayer\plugins\visualisations\Winamp\Milkdrop\*.milk
    ....\MusicPlayer\plugins\visualisations\Winamp\vis_milk.dll
