yes, buying Win 7 makes no sense. At the Moment you get Win 8 for 30 Euro and also the media pack for free. And if you install some free tools like classic Shell Win 8 is like Win 7 without the Metro view.
I bought Win 8 and it is very stable and works without problems. And perhaps you will like the Metro view in the future (At the moment I don´t like it).

Win 8 is much faster then win 7 also. My FloppyDTV cards had used legacy firewire drivers in win7, they are perfect redone in win8.

That is excellent to hear (I have two FloppyDTV C in my MP machine)!
I see you are running 64bit. Looks like I will upgrading to Windows 8 pro (64 bit) form Windows 7 pro 32 bit as soon as MP is stable on Windows 8.

Just one question Arturas:
Are you using the EVR renderer in MP on Windows 8 or did you have to go back to direct X (Does Windows 8 support Aero/EVR?)?

I use the EVR renderer on Win 8. The same as i did with Win 7. By the way, if you use the Desktop view Win 8 looks quite the same as Win 7. So i can not understand why some people are strictly against Win 8. I do not see any disatvantages comparing to Win 7. But of course also not much advantages.

Plus to standard desktop user has big strart menu :) instead of that tricky start button with difficult submenus.

    Luke:
I use standard EVR. As I know win8 has no aero at all. From graphics side it works perfect with my nvidia GT440. Plus win8 has much better sound. It seems that is cured sound mixer :)

    Hi.

What's about Aero (this is needed to run MP smoothly)? This isn't available on Win8 at all, not even with 3rd party software... So MP on Win8 will never be as good as on Win7, it''s simply impossible (at least until Microsoft adds Aero later on with SP1 or so)...

same here, i have no Problems with Win 8 and MP 1.3 Alpha. MP runs perfect smooth and without dropped frames while watching TV (graphics Card is a AMD HD 6570).
Lehmden, have you ever tried Win 8 and MP?

    Hi.
Yes I have. What a waste of Time. Win8 is a giant "pain in the a***". The Metro- UI is absolutely ugly, not usable with Mouse/Keyboard at all. I want a Desktop OS, not a cheap, crappy copy of much better mobile OS like Android or IOS. The need to install tons of extra software only to get basic OS functionality, it's a really bad joke, but no OS at all... And MP 1.3 Beta did not work proper on low power (weak CPU) systems like mine if there is Win8 installed...

I will never use it at all, Before I use Win8 I will change to Linux and XBMC...

I went to 8 the day it was released on my workstation and 2 days ago on the htpc. You guys are right there are some advantages and to be honest I like it. But to achieve that I had to do some tweaking. E.g. to get rid of this metro app shit which might be suitable for a tablet or smartphone.

Right now I give the new start menu a chance. Only advantage I see is the presenting of search results. For other purposes the behaviour in classic start menu like on right click was way better and much more logical.

What I hate: there are some settings like advanced restart which you can only access in the new control panel. So there is no central place for your settings - bad bad bad...

Another bs from ms: Wol is not supported from S4 hybrid. The fast boot/wake up from this state is imho the biggest advantage in 8 atm. But if its not possible to wake from the outside out of this state it would be useless for me. Luckily realtek took care of that in their latest driver. But you will not get that via win update....

So, back to topic: as the ts doesn't want to take care of all this stuff and just wants to run a stable sys I keep to my recommendation for 7 in his case. Buying 8 and doing the downgrade is nonetheless a good advice in case he changes his mind.

There are a lot of win 8 threads in the forum. Maybe one of us should start a more general win 8 one to centralize the issues around it. If one of you could do that I would feel grateful, if not I will do it as soon I am back home tommorrow night...

Sorry for all the highjacking 1gkar :))

Lehmden, please do not understand me wrong. I am also not very entuthiastic from Windows 8 but it is also not as bad as you said for a "normal" user. And you need not to install tons of extra Software. Classic Shell is all you need and it is free. And if you do not want the Metro-UI you need not using it.
Concerning the bad performance on weak CPUs i don´t know. But on my hardware it seems to be faster and not slower than Win 7. By the way my experience is that MP in general needs much more CPU and GPU power than for example XBMC and DVBviewer.
