Hi,

Has anybody a working HTPC based running on XPe?
I am specially interested in a diskless system based on XPe and PXE (boot via network).
see: http://www.gctglobal.com/Contact/Remote_Boot/remote_boot.html

The advantages of this setup can be:
- No noise from the harddisk
- Hibernate once, boot many
- Cheaper setup if you have several clients (and one server)
- All clients (can) work with the same image

Disadvantage
- Boots a bit slower
- Server has to be powered on
- Needs more memory

Anybody any experience?

Thanks,
Ben

Hi BennieBoy,

I'm also looking for a XPe mediaportal setting.
I would like to try to build a working image in the next days....
Did you've already found some useful infos?
Thanks.

Have you tried geexbox?
The main benefit of diskless HTPCs is to be run everywhere, out-of-the-box. Geexbox has solid foundations and experience in this area. MP requires to be set up and tweaked for each different system. A long and tedious process IMO.

I'd be really interested in the outcome of your attempts regarding the integration of MediaPortal in a diskless setup. Keep us posted on your progress plz.

it can't

i just wanted to save some hassle for these 2 guys if they were only after ready-made diskless HTPC setups.

what they want to achieve seems terribly complicated from my point of view

Must agree with that, i have done some projects with XPe for my work, it is very nice if you are creating for example a settop box which stays untouched for a couple of years, but for other projects where the software tends to change a lot in the future it is really a lot of work to get your image up to date.

And for as far i know XPe is not sold to consumers, but to OEM's and system builders so it could be difficult to get it licensed to the mainstream users....

Maybe this is something to take a look at... http://www.nu2.nu/pebuilder/

I've had to do XPe based work in the past and would fully agree with this. If you plan to have X number of the exact same hardware configurations it may be worth the effort, otherwise its can be a real PITA getting things running and a PITA whose benefits don't necessarily outweigh the effort needed to get you up and running.

On the other hand, wouldn't it be fun getting it to work?
Especially the hibernate once resume many seems a pleasant feature
