Seems to be a nice board dedicated for this kind of stuff.
I read that MPEG2 hardware support is only supported by the Linux drivers.
Don't know about the DirectX stuff. They do not talk about that.

It is at least worth a try, isn't it?

Awesome!

Today I installed a new XP and mediaportal onto a Compact flash card.
Ok BennieBoy... you have now peaked my interest. Could you please explain a bit more about installing the EWF. Do you have some kind of instructions on how you built your system. I'm looking to build a small, quiet front end and have my server do all the work, and I really like the idea of CF and nLite if you think it's a good solution. I want to build something low profile as well. My concern is of speed. Will this CF system be nice and fast. Why did you install MP on a network share? Is MP residing on your server? Maybe you could write up a nice step by step HOWTO project to show off your style!

This is great! Finally I'm getting somewhere with the hardware side...:D

    Hi!

Considering to boot XP from a USB disk, and I have read the guide that was linked to earlier in the thread.
However, as asked earlier in this thread, which things do you actually need on your XP installation, and which items can you remove in nLite?

I guess your config file (BennieBoy) would come in handy for me as well, so I to would like a copy. Just don't forget to remove your CD-Key ^^,

    Hi,

I will continue the XP on Compact flash in the dedicated thread.
I will include the nLite files overthere.

I have to make clear that the HowTo is for booting from compact flash card which is connected to the IDE port (bij use of a CF2IDE converter).
This is not a guide for booting from USB stick.

Booting from USB has some disadvantages (and advantages)
    Disadvantage (I had)
    Could not go into standby.
Had problems with other USB storage devices

    Advantage:
Just remove your USB stick and make a backup on another machine
Faster than the 40x speed CF solution.
Never tried EWF on the USB stick, but it was still quite responsive

    Greetz,
    Ben

Which problems did you have with the other USB Storage devices?
All other USB devices worked fine (mouse, keyboard, game controllers...)?

The standby issue isn't actually something that bothers me, my HTPC is so quiet :)

Also, how much storage do you need?
I see that you use a 4GB CF card, but will a 2GB USB pen be sufficant?

This is interesting stuff, but is it really worth the trouble if you're not using MP to record TV? In my system the harddisk is hardly active at all since I told XP not to index files and switched the pagefile off. It does spin up every now and then though and I can't find the reason for that. Would EWF be benificial to a system with a HDD?

    Comsat,

I use MP to record TV, but it is done on my server.
The frontend is what it is, a frontend.
In my case this is a very attractive solution.

    About the HDD and EWF.
I think that the following setup would make sense.
    HDD with two partitions
    One System (C:)
    One Storage (D:)

Install the System on C: and protect it with EWF (Rock steady installation and fast solution)
Install MP on D: and configure the storage on D:

You need to install MP on D: because it writes information to the database (like the position of a watched movie)

    Greetz,
    Ben

Thanks BennieBoy, that's what I had in mind, but I hadn't figured out the simple solution of installing MP on D: (in fact I just didn't know that EWF could be set for separate partitions, assuming that it would affect the IDE I/O at a lower level). Seems like a nice try as it may get rid of some Powerstrip issues as well. I have a rockstable system and this seems a good way of keeping it so.

    Leuk projectje voor Hemelvaart!
