the story about svn is that it represents the latest development status of mediaportal and may contain errors and bugs that won't be in so called "stable builds" or patches...
but nevertheless if you want to give it a try you can simply copy your current mediaportal installation into another folder (f.e. MediaportalSVN) and apply the svn builds on that copy (you have to choose the installation path for the svn at the time you install the svn-snapshot)... it should work and shouldn't break your stable installation of mp...
