    the codecs included are:

    FFDshow tryout
    Haali
    Vobsub

    only these are supported

perhaps a HD addon will follow with core and some free codecs, the base will be Open Source

Perfect idea. This would be great for aswell the MP users as MP Devs.

    - All users are using the same filters, maybe even possible to force the same version of the filters. This would limit the amount of problems wich could be created by different versions.
    - DEV's can focus more on the MP-supplied filters. Instead of looking for problems created by individual settings.
    - Better intergration with FFDshow (see this topic as example).
    - Better intergration with MKV's (if it isnt already there).
    - Control filters, based on predefined rules, from MP itself.

The most importent part on this, i think, it's the support for FFDshow. This package can do soo much. It is actively developed and using it by default in MP it maybe creates an extra boost for the ffdshow dev's make it even better.

    My opinion on the filters:
    - FFdshow: for decoding MPEG4/MPEG2/Subtitles/Scaling
    - AC3 for AC3 sounds (if it's not already possible with ffdshow audio)
    - Haali splitter
    - Maybe QuickTime alternative, however i don't think it's very wide used within complete movies e.d.

I don't know what our dev's are thinking of this idea. It's worth mention it. For sure i'm willing to test.

the first try wil be open source or free filters only.

FFDshow can do AC3 but not very advanced stuff like encode to DTS but for normal users this is no problem
Haali is needed for MKV and other containers
    VobSub for subtitels

Quicktime is not possible because it is a commercial product, perhaps a MPI add-on

Could this mpi installer also configure the codecs for best result with MP, because when the codecs are mis configured then the user will have more problems then before...

I asked the creator of the MPI installer if there is an option to execute an external command like a batch file afterinstalling.

So the better default settings can be added if the MPI supports this

Why VobSub if subtitle support is already in ffdshow?

indeed...What's your reason for including Vobsub when ffdshow can do the same?

By the way, are there any Microsoft codecs/filters or other stuff ( http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms783348.aspx )already installed when installing your OS, that could cause conflicts with the planned MP-included codecs? And does one have to uninstall one of these codecs/filters to prevent conflicts?

Isn't real alternative needed or is this already handled with ffdshow?

Are you guys planning to replace the MPA and MPV decoders with FFDshow tryout and Haali in the future?

And are there any "mainstream" files that cannot be played once ffdshow and haali are installed? (I have trouble getting the video of a .ts h264 1080p Apocalypto BluRay Sample file to work correctly...)

This will be a personal project to see if there is any interest in the plugin and to see if it is really helpfull to do so.

I had some problems with sub using FFDshow but we will see.

After reading your comments I will not include VobSub and will only include FFDshow and Haali.

MPV and MPA will not be replaced.

Ok, so MPA and MPV will be included in the standard package and ffdshow/haalisplitter as a special plugin. So it in theory, it could be possible to uninstall MPA and MPV after the installation of the ffdshow/haali plugin. Just to minimise the amount of installed plugins and possible conflicts.
...Is this plugin going to have some presets for ffdshow and haali built in for correct and optimal playback of all supported files?

There are many Directshow filters installed by default. You can see/manage them with Directshow Filter manager. Beware, changing merrits etc. can result in some unexpected behaviour.

Real Alternative isnt very wide used I think. I don't really use it on my HTPC and I use a lot of stuff from the internet.

I don't think replacing MPV/MPA is a great idea. The MPEG2 decoder(s) of ffdshow (Libavcodec, libmpeg) aren't that good. I use ffdshow just for playing MPEG4 (Divx/Xvid/x264) and for upscaling those codecs. And offcourse subtitles :)

I think your problem with the h264 1080P file has more to do with your CPU power. to play that smooth you really need a "FAST" computer. Mine 3.0GHz DualCore has too much problems with it. CPU usage is like 200%
