Audio pops/clicks only during Ch4 News and Weather (3 Viewers)

Hi

I've checked CH4 news today and a couple of days ago and didn't hear any problems. After watching CH4 news tonight I then checked CH4+1 news and that has severe popping/clicking, so then I tested with DVBViewer and that's the same.

It's strange as I can't imagine it's a transmission problem as millions of people with STB would be complaining ;)

98% of the population wont notice those pops and cracks. 1.99% wont care since it is some weather program and the rest... well they bark the wrong tree (this case MP devs :)).

Not to be rude but I think only deaf people wouldn't be bothered by the noises (it's the news and weather by the way, not just the news. Maybe if it were just the weather people wouldn't care so much). They were particularly intrusive tonight and as as they don't happen on any other channel or programme (that I've noticed anyway), I think most people would be questioning what was wrong.

Probably the picture jumping a lot of people wouldn't notice though. I only noticed it after others on this thread mentioned it and I thought I was quite sensitive to anomalies ;)

So at present it seems like the issue is caused by factors that are out of our control since 3rd party software exhibits the same behaviour as MP. If the factors are out of our control then I think it is reasonable to say there is nothing we can do.

@doveman: if this issue bothers you enough, it might be reasonable to consider emailing, calling or writing to Ch 4 and asking them to look into the issue.

Do we conclude the thread here by marking it as "no bug"?

Yeah, it doesn't appear to be a MP bug. Could be codecs, tuner card, tuner card driver (although there must be others who use the Nova-T for UK DVB-T Freeview as it was quite a popular card). I very much doubt it's a Ch4 problem because if it was it would affect all the STB as well and they would have had plenty of complaints and I'm sure that's what they'll tell me if I ask them to investigate just because it has problems on my PC(s) ;)

Personally I think there is no shame in asking. The issues in the sample that I looked at from earlier in the thread would be overlooked by people that I know. Considering that your latest comments suggest that the issue is only on Ch 4 + 1, I would pluck up the courage and contact them if I were in your position.

Thread marked as "no bug". Cheers everyone for your input. :)

If it were HW or driver issue then TsWriter & TsReader would see errors in the stream. Now the error is in the video and audio streams that cannot be broken by HW or drivers.

It cannot be codecs when LAV, MS and even no directshow based VLC shows the same corruption.

Do like mm1352000 suggests - contact the broadcaster. For example in Finland the broadcaster's are sending crap on weekly basis. So often that I have given up even contacting them.

Just to let you know it's a broadcaster problem. I have the same sound issue with a set-top box and cable. And as my setop box sucks it is very sensitive to any crap in a stream. Probably over compressed as it sounds on my settop box like audio artefacts.

Just contact the broadcaster. The more people send in general problems and keep nagging the support explaining that it is not a software/hardware the better - until they forward a ticket to an actual engineer.

Thanks Scythe42, it's very helpful to hear from someone else who's checked this and as you have the same problem with your STB it obviously is the broadcaster's fault, so I'll get on to them :)

Well I e-mailed them on 23/08 and haven't received a reply but I watched on Ch4+1 last night and Ch4 tonight and didn't see/hear any problems, so maybe they've done something. I'm using a K-World USB tuner instead of the Nova-T 500 now though, so perhaps that's just less sensitive. I'll check with the Nova-T again sometime.

Perhaps you could check if it's OK on your STB now as well sometime Scythe42?
