Tired of 24 fps juddering ?

    Anyone tried this:
    "Frame doubling interpolation 24fps -> 48fps" + setting tv to 48hz or 96hz...

    Frame doubling interpolation for 1080p x264 mkv's for superfluid 48 fps - Guru3D.com Forums

    /gibman

It's funny you mention that gibman, I have been using frame doubling for a while now. I don't think it's just me but I have failed to get 24 fps stuff smooth in Mediaportal for a long time, so instead I use ffdshow using its deinterlace filter for 48 fps. I will check this out though, because it looks I could get some greater benefits.

I should also mention that I have bad problems with 1.1.0 alpha + latest SVN with the automatic refresh changer. It is setting off a chain of events that ends in a blue screen, something I used to only get when the changer was using win32 calls to attempt the change (what should result from a blank action, which is not the case).

The cause of the problem is leaving live TV, where I go from 50hz to 60hz. The TV plays fine, I'm not replicating what others say about the TV section not using the changer. When I stop TV, it should call powerstrip via c:\refresh\ntsc.bat, configured correctly as my default refresh rate (set to ntsc_hz in the configuration). Instead, I get the blue screen indicative of a win32 attempt. I have copy/pasted the path to test it, and I have also tried escaping the slashes. Lots of blue screens today! The batch files work perfectly when run from explorer, I have clicked and clicked without getting a blue screen.

If I remove the 'default rate' option, I can stop TV just fine. It is also fine playing NTSC material.

    Any clues?

OR, and this might be a crazy idea, one watches it the way it is intended to look like...
Smooth 24p (and mpc-hd as external player because mp is incapable of doing it right :( ), just like in your local cinema. the way the director intended it to be seen, and the framerate he worked with while pacing the movie.
Edit: Using the awesome refreshrate changer of course :)

This frame doubling stuff is utter nonsense. Next thing will be people telling us 240hz tvs are neccessary for proper playback

I heared 240hz TV's are needed for proper playback... lol

I am puzzled with what you write. Do you mean that even with the dynamic refreshrate changer + MPC-HC codec it is still not possible to watch true 24p? Or am I reading it wrong... ? Because rarely I still see a judder, but this could be due to a codec error or cpu/gpu limitation... I dont know.

First: Sorry for my english :D .

I sort of mixed my two statements together. That way they probably didnt make sense anymore.

My first statement was about gibmans "Frame doubling interpolation" post. Just read through the thread he linked to to see that this thing is a really bad idea. And I mean the effects on the video, not that one needs a powerful pc or whatever.

The other thing I mixed in my previous post was the way I watch my movies/TV series. Using MediaPortal 1.0.2 with the awesome Automatic Refreshrate Changer.
BUT (big but) the internal MediaPortal player is not able to achieve proper, super smooth 24p playback.
MPC-HC does. No rarely stutter , judder, or anything.
Thats why I have to use MPC-HC as an external player which opens fullscreen once I select a videofile in MediaPortal.
(both MediaPortal and MPC-HC use CoreAVC with cuda enabled and haali splitter. using evr. This is some bug in MediaPortal which I hope gets fixed with this . Although I dont have any audio problems, but one frame stutter every 40 somewhat seconds )

I have read posts about 24p playback but I still have not gotten the answer about if MP 1.02 is capable of playing in 24p without audio out of sync? I am using vista with aero on and EVR as renderer. FFDSHOW for audio and Video. 1080p plays fine with 50 hz. But with refresh rate changer on and the screen set to 1080/24p the audio gets out of sync.

Anyone have a solution to this?

Frame interpolation is the stuff that most LCD tv's an a handfull of plasmas incorporate to sell more units (fancy names, fancy specs, higher price). This together with dynamic contrast is just ruining image-quality. When I want to watch a movie I want the real movie-sensation, and part of this is the slow (and sometimes jerky) pans that 24 pictures per second results in.

Using 24 pictures per second is just not enough to get smooth pans, this is why directors and cinematographs spends years learning how to place objcts in panning-scenes.

TV's like Panasonic that displays 24p as 96p is just quadrupling the image, showing the same frame 4 times. Unless you enable that "movie-magic-image-enhacing-crap" of course. Yesterday I saw Philips TV's proclaiming that 200 Hz is the new deal. WTF...calculating interpolated images doesn't create new data, it just ruins the existing. I think most people will agree that taking a sandwich and cutting it into four pieces won't give you four sandwiches ;)
