Out of interest why dont you use aero?

Agreed, its there, it does the job, why not use it, I know I do, and i think i have a comparable if not better picture especially when viewing HD content than my normal dvb tv transmission has.

When I first installed everything on the HTPC, anytime PowerDVD would load a Blu-Ray, it would have to turn off aero temporarily while playing, and doing so everytime you started or stopped a bd would cause the screen to flash black and jerk a bit and I didn't much care for that. And now that I got MediaPortal working really nicely and running 90% of the time, I guess the idea is that nobody ever sees windows anyway, so it doesn't bother me if the topbar of a window is semi-transparent or not. I was also under the impression that running aero does somewhat slow down your pc, so I figured I'd rather squeeze performance than prettiness; I thought it just made the Vista interface snazzier.

optimising interlacing

So now, having moved to multiseat, I have a system thats fairly stable, now to try to make the PQ as nice as possible.

I have vista/aero/EVR - no tearing. pixel format RGB 0-255 (tv set to match), tv set to dot-by-dot so I have a 1:1 pixel 1920x1080 setup. PDVD8 is my HD and SD codec, with h/w accell.

Interlacing is my next target. It seems to me from my experimentation that the interlace settings wherever you go inside MP config, makes no difference whatsoever. The only thing that does, is the interlace config under avivo in ATI ccc (8.12), where I have the option of bob or weave currently. With bob - horizontal thin lines such as top edge of sports scores look horribly flickery. with weave - I see lots of comb-teeth on fast moving edges.. so to try to improve..

I will shortly try the registry hacks mentioned elsewhere to make additional ATI de-interlace modes available. What modes are recommended - I have SD (576i PAL TV) and HD (1080i TV - BBCHD) as my main content types?
alternatively, I can consider x3/x4 CPU or additional GPU board if anyone has definitively proven that this helps?

as another approach, is there any way to to get the TV to do the deinterlace work instead? clearly the TV can do this with interlaced signals from its native tuners. I have the option of setting 25i (@1920x1080) as the output mode in ATI ccc - when I do this the TV tells me its getting a 1080i signal. But the bob/weave setting in ATI ccc still has definate effect - so am guessing that perhaps I am getting a de-interlace (on the htpc, bob or weave) followed by a re-interlace (on the htpc) to get the 25i output followed by a deinterlace (on the TV) to actually display on the panel in this setup? which is clearly not ideal...

What Catalyst driver version are you using? Weave just means no deinterlacing. Apparently you get more deinterlace settings if you you turn aero off- conversely you may then get tearing though- possibly fixed by setting vertical refresh to always on in the Catalyst 3D settings. Ideally you need at least adaptive deinterlacing, motion and vector adaptive are the best.

To get vector adaptive deinterlacing i had to turn off Aero, but still now I think the picture quality is fine with EVR.
Looking forward to check deinterlacing quality with a Phenom X3 next weeks.

Under Windows Vista you can also use vector adaptive deinterlacing with the 780G without a HT3.0 cpu. You must edit the registry to make this possible:

The "{GUID}" must match with your system. After a reboot you can change the deinterlace method in CCC to VA.

It works great for SD Picture.

I can't get this to work (no additional de-interlace options in ati ccc after reboot).

I have only one GUID that contains any UMD\DXVA subsection, and its clearly all about ATI settings, so I think I am in right place.

can someone who got it working confirm the exact key and value? is it a string?

I had terrible tearing some time ago, it went away completely when found out I had to turn on aero AND set vertical refresh to always on in catalyst 3d settings. the prog you pointed me to - I don't like to apply bundled fixes (just change 1 thing at once).As per the settings mentioned in that url, I've just tried VForceDeint (not vforcedeint) and no difference with aero on. With aero OFF - "adaptive" de-interlace option appears in ccc now. so getting somewhere. but I suspect I will get "torn to pieces" now...
mptcs, DethSpune. do you avoid tearing? and what interlace behaviour do you use?

I have a mediacenter with the GA-MA78GM-S2H mobo. 1080p/720p mkv/wmvhd is all fine. I have 2 blu-ray discs, and i use Arcsoft to play this discs. 1 movie is fine (Earth), but the other blu ray disc gives me horizontal stripes all the time. When i turn off DXVA in arcsoft, the stripes are gone, but then the movie is stuttering. I have windows aero enabled. what can i do?
I use a x2 4850e processor and it's a fine Ambilight LCD tv of philips and i use 720p resolution. i tryed 50 and 60hz. please respond, it gives me headaches.

Here´s a thing that helped me:
My picture was "flickering" a little bit, with that I mean that it was jumping up & down maybe one pixel. Most noticeable on sharp still standing objects, as for example a results board in a sports show.
I enabled "LCD overdrive" (in ATI CCC, settings for Digital Panel DVI), and the flickering disappeared. I don't know why this is working since it should not work at all in Vista according to ATI help page. Anybody knows about this?

I'm not so familiar with the terms yet, is maybe "tearing" the correct term for what I call "flickering"?
