I started this topic but I realized we are in the beginning point. It is a pity 'cause MP is the best soft for HTPC. I really exhausted to find out what it is happenning. For the reason I ask developers to make an effort to solve this "blank screen".
Till this moment, I am available to give you any assistance you may need.
I've noticed the same problem with certain DVDs. I've come across two so far -- The Crow, and Terminator 2. All the other ones I've tried have worked fine.
It doesn't seem to make a difference whether I play the actual disc, or a copy on my hard drive.
I've expereienced this problem as far back as I can recall. It happens with every .avi file I have tried (primarily TV series).
- only happens the FIRST time MP tries to play file after reboot/startup.
- stopping and reloading codec then restarting file works fine.
- does NOT happen if font set to 96, but does with 120.
another one here. black screen with some avis and most dvds.
i solved it going to calibration screen and setting a smaller size for the video display window. after that, there are some unfilled black lines on the left and bottom of the screen, but at least i can see any video or dvd
And yet another one here too.
MP 0.2.3 RC1 with SVN 07132077 (rev15164).
Black screen after copyright notice for all my DVD:s I have stored on harddisk but plays rental DVDs fine as well as AVI files.
Aspect ratio seems not to affect the issue for me, still remains black.
No affect by changing screens setup either.
Plays OK in my other players (Media Player, Media Player Classic, AsusDVD, MPlayer).
A couple of weeks ago it played ok but after that DirectX went crazy on my ATI card which ended up in a switch to a Nvidia card.
Screen resolution 1808x1016 connected DVI-to-HDMI, resolution is there to avoid overscan which I get at 1920x1080.
Some infro from the log, this first part I have picture:

After this user action by me I loose picture (screen is black, audio is fine).
I have this DPI bug aswell. I would like to know if this is a mediaportal bug or if only 96 dpi resolution is supported. I have searched the forums and found out that the most common answer to this problem is: set dpi to 96.
The problem:
When using other setting than 96 dpi results in blank screen during movie playback if aspect ratio is not 1:1.
I'm using a 1080 TV and the native screen resolution results in unreadable (too small) text in windows. A workaround for this problem would be to use a lower resolution in windows (like 720p) and have the option to specify another resolution for mediaportal (in my case 1080p). If this is doable I would not need to change the dpi. So, the other question is, how can I specify a resultion for mediaportal. It's direct-x, right? Shouldn't be so hard then...
