@thekiwi - sweet - knew it wasn't 4TRecords fault
Did that - actually it didn't work with the files I wanted to convert but I tried another one and that worked so I'm using it as my test file...
Think I did that - registered the filters manually as per the info in the link I posted above - all went OK (I registered the x64 splitter file but not the x86 file though - didn't think I needed to do register both of those?).
Opened radlight, went to the MP Video codec and selected "normal" (tried "preferred" too but same result, as follows) - there's no "save" button but I guess it did something.
Restarted.
Opened MP, went to play the original MP4 file (just in case doing this had magically helped play it - it hadn't) Went to play the MKV file and got this:
Unable to play....
Video Codec: AVC
Audio Codec: AAC Vercion 4LC
... and my "love affair" with codecs continues
The "funny" thing is that BOTH of these files play without any problems through MP on my client which is the same set-up as my HTPC (windows 7, Power DVD10 - only difference is that it's running RC3 and the HTPC is running RC4) EXCEPT I have installed the K-Lite codec pack on it...
...so maybe the codec pack is the cheap, nasty but easy fix?
...or maybe it would be great if this stuff was just easier in MP - like there was some code that said "hey, this file can be played outside MP so stop dicking with it and just play it!!!" - that would be great!!!
Have I done something wrong which is glaringly obvious?
Cheers
mkvtoolnix -- Matroska tools for Linux/Unix and Windows
Run mkvmerge and drag your file to top or bottom pane, then hit the start muxing, should take less than a minute, voila mkv...

...you need the x86 version even if running x64, then use radlight filter manager to register what you want.
