Imagine my pride after following the EPG thread and subsequent walk throughs to eventually find an .XMLTV file on my desktop, i started the XMLTV plug in and followed the instructions, placing the generated file into the correct folder, and if just like magic, up pops 2 weeks worth of programme data, all this without really understanding what i actually did!!

Unfortunately it seems that the 2 weeks was all i got and low and behold two weeks later and the EPG data has dried up, now i have managed to redo the original process and everything is back up and running, but obviously something isn't quite working correctly, a setting that automatically updates the EPG??, or a process i have missed...

Any ideas.

Cheers

Steve, well done on the progress so far....

Long story short is that you'll need to create a windows scheduled task that runs the EPG grabber once a day to create you an XML file and then make sure that the XML plugin in TV server is set to read it in at regular intervals.

I set mine up a few months ago to run at 2am every morning and it works a charm.

If you're still struggling let me know and I can do a more detailed walk through if that would help.

    Hi Tommy,

    I would appreciate your help.

I think i understand what you mean, i remember a setting in the xmltv plug in asking for the location of the xml file and asking for a time to update it.......but how i set up the windows scheduled task to create the updated xml file is a bit beyond me.

    Thanks in advance :D

steve, let me know what version windows you're using and I'll knock something together.

Confirm you are using the EPG grabber that was developed by some of the guys on geekzone.co.nz?

    Hey Tommy,

Really appreciate the help, I am using Windows XP media edition.

I have listed other specs under "My System"

I did use the "Geekzone" forums for all of my info.

I have, i would say an intermediate knowledge of computers.

    Many thanks

    Hi Bleazie,

Wow, that ForTheRecord looks awesome!! I haven't got into the documentation as yet (will print it out at work tomorrow), but is it straight forward to implement this? Is there anything to watch out for? It appears from the screenshots to be all incorporated into MediaPortal as well - can all the recording be set from within Mediaportal?

    Look good!!

    Cheers

    Graham

If you can get MP up and running you'll be fine wit 4TR :D . Yep recording can be set from within MP just like the normal TV plugin - such as "record once", "at this time every week" (you'll never get a recording with no name on it when you use 4TR :) ) etc but advanced settings are done in the 4TR console.

Setup is straight forward but I recommend reading the instructions before you start! Make sure you set up the Shares properly and once 4TR is installed go into MP TV Server Config and enable the 4TR plugin before trying to "ping" MP from the 4TR console.

Once you've got it sorted you'll wonder why you didn't start using 4TR sooner...

    Hi Bleazie,

I'm keen to get ForTheRecord installed!! One last question, do all the scheduled recordings appear in the TVGuide within Media Portal and on the Scheduler option? I thought I saw somewhere a shot of the TVGuide with Icons next to scheduled recordings donating what type e.g. recurring. If so, would you mind dropping a screenshot of each for me from your system.

    Thanks again for the recommendation.

No problem - the following screenshots are from the BleazleWide skin (for obvious reasons..) - I have just set these recordings from my test PC (client) in MP - i.e. You don't have to use the 4TR Management Console to set recordings, you only use that for advanced recordings such as "record everything with the word "news" in the title" etc.

I have set and then cancelled a programme (Emmerdale), set another to record every week at this time, and then just set a couple of one off recordings - as you can see the same info is "reflected" in the scheduled recordings screen...

One note - when you install 4TR and import your existing recordings (which is very straightforward) there won't be any Channel Logos alongside them in the Recorded TV screen (just a default image) :( . This also happens if you have to "roll back" to a previous image of MP and then have to import the recordings made since you created that image  This looks really ugly but (as far as I know) there's no way to get around it - you'll also see that the new recordings you make will have Channel Logos but they will only appear after you scroll post them - again this is not good (imo). The good thing is that once you've watched and deleted the "pre 4TR" recordings everything will be fine with regard to the Channel Logos :)

Now I'm off to cancel "Emmerdale" & "Dr. Phil" etc..... :D

I'm going to stay up late tonight and get it installed ...... got the day off work tomorrow :p ... looking after my daughter  and helping out daycare taking out 80 kids to Kelly Taltons

Again, appreciate the trouble you have gone to with the explanation, screenshots and answering my questions.

Will let you know how it goes

    Cheers

    Graham

    PS: Love the skin!!!

PSS: Notice you record C4 - do you cut music videos from recordings by any chance??

I just can't get into the mood to do any work today  luckily I work from home :D ...

Good luck with the install & Kelly Tarltons  - make sure you read the instructions before installing 4TR (though I think I covered the key points earlier in the thread)! There are a couple of things which can trip you up if you don't but if you do it should be very straightforward - I'll keep an eye on this thread tonight to see if you get stuck with anything..

...Notice you record C4 - do you cut music videos from recordings by any chance??

Nah - I have done a couple of times but I can't really be bothered with the time it takes to do it properly - I tend to grab any music videos I want from YouTube - quality is crap but that's OK, I like showing my kids things like Michael Nesmith - Cruisin (Lucy & Ramona) & Monte Video - Shoop Shoop Diddy Wop! haha, they love it :D It's amazing what you can find :D

    Hi Again,

Thanks for the offer to help out tonight - appreciated!! Not sure when I will get started - hopefully my wife gets buried into her mags so I can start early :p Will certainly let you know how it goes.

Regarding Music videos, I have cut 300 so far - I have a routine of using Handbrake to convert the file to avi format and then use SolveigMM Free cutter to cut out a music video. The files are around 150MB, so burn up a bit of space but good quality, however I have a 1.5TB RAID drive so not a big problem :p

    Cheers
