@TranceManNZ: I haven't had a lot of time to test but in the limited time I had I was not able to reproduce the issue you're seeing.
:sorry:

Thanks for trying. I think I have some file permission issues with Windows. I also had a few .dll's that are locked out when trying to upgrade codecs. I can't seem to get them back on my side.

I am going to format and reinstall :)

Hi All

I've got a couple of issues going on (OK, those who know me might say I've got more than that, but that's a different story!:D)

1. One of my 1TB HDD has just crapped itself (Seagate Barracuda 7200.11) and it's full of movies :( The disc is under warranty but is there any way I can recover the movies before I send it off? I'm guessing "no" because I can't even get it to show up on my PC, the disc is just "clicking" and not reading :( gutted  If anyone has any ideas I'd love to hear them!

2. Port forwarding - I've spent fricken hours on this!! I've set up a static IP for my HTPC (no worries there), forwarded the ports I want to forward in Windows Firewall, on my Router (D-Link 655) and modem (D-Link 526B) and have even tried bridging the router and modem (which killed everything so I sent back to how it was) - nothing has worked  I'm at the point where I need someone to take a look at this because I can't see why it won't work and I've Googled the cr@p out of this topic (been through everything on Portforward.com etc). If anyone out there is able to help please PM me - maybe this could be done via remote access?

Cheers

    *Gutted*! :sorry:
I've heard there is a place in Hamilton that is able to recover data from unreadable HDDs. They remove the platters and do all sorts of fancy things to get the data off. I'd wager it would cost a pretty penny though. Whatever you do, I'd leave the power disconnected though. If it is clicking then it sounds like a head crash and the more that it clicks, the more damage that gets done... I think.

What ports are you trying to forward and for what purpose?

What internal IP Address do you have for your HTPC, Router and Modem?

In regards to issue 2. If your network goes modem -> router -> htpc then the following should be your config

Modem - ports forwarded to router ip address
Router - ports forwarded to htpc ip address.

This would only apply if the ip address range on the modem/router connection are different to the ip address range for the router/htpc side, if all the ip addresses are in the same range and the router is just acting as a switch then config as below. This is best identified by what gateway ip address is set on the htpc, whether it's pointing to your router or modem.

Modem - ports forwarded to htpc ip address
    Router - no forwarding

I use the option "Blank the screen" screensaver opton in MP after 8 minutes of inactivity. My new LG TV supports switching off the monitor, which I've enabled in the Startup/Resume settings. It does this after 8 minutes, but it doesn't switch back on when using the remote again. Is that a fault of MP or the TV?

It looks like I'll have to go back to simply blanking the screen and leaving the TV on which wastes power.

    Thanks.

    Hi Guys

Sorry for the slow reply, I've been away since Friday morning and have only just arrived back home (so of course the first thing I did was check the MP forum :) )

    To answer the above questions:

Ports I want to forward: 8080 42080 4321 8017 - I think that's it (just going from memory right now). Ideally I want to be able to use Amprdroid (port's 4321 & 8017 I think - I've only played around with this a little bit a few weeks ago) and/or MPExtended or, worst case scenario at least be able to access the ForTheRecord Webservice - all of which require ports to be forwarded.

Network setup: Modem -> router -> htpc

    Modem IP: 192.168.1.1

    Router IP: 192.168.0.1

HTPC IP: 192.168.0.50 (Static IP) - Default Gateway IP is 192.168.0.1

...This would only apply if the ip address range on the modem/router connection are different to the ip address range for the router/htpc side, if all the ip addresses are in the same range and the router is just acting as a switch then config as below.

I don't know where to find the IP range so you lost me a bit there but...

...This is best identified by what gateway ip address is set on the htpc, whether it's pointing to your router or modem...

so it looks like my HTPC is pointing to the Router... so now what? Do I only need to set up port forwarding rules on the modem (pointing to the router's IP?) and have no portforwarding rules on the router at all?..

    Cheers

Why are you using two IP Address ranges, as effectively they are 2 different "networks"?, ie 192.168.0.0 and 192.168.1.0. Is the 192.168.0.1 on the modem assigned by your ISP? WIth your Wireless Router ... what port on the back do you have plugged into the Modem? The "INTERNET" port or one of the ETH ports?

You presumably have a DHCP server running which is assigning IP Addresses for other machines on the network? Is this your Wireless Router? What is the IP Address and Gateway of your personal machine (laptop/desktop) ?

Is the ADLS Modem set in Half Bridge mode?

For my network, a wee while ago, the setup would have been
Modem LAN Interface - 192.168.1.1 with DHCP disabled
plugged into the LAN interface would be the Wireless Router with 192.168.1.2 using one of its ETH ports with DHCP ENabled
Then all your machines can have 192.168.1.x

As thekiwi said you have 2 separate networks (192.168.0.X and 192.168.1.X) and these networks cant talk directly to each other without the router.
You can either change your network as in the above post and then port forward from your modem direct to your new HTPC IP address
(it would remove a layer of security from your network though)

    OR

Since your router is designed to be used in this type of situation my suggestion would be the following.
I assume you have the modem plugged into the Internet port on the router.

1 - First you need to find out what IP address the router has for the Internet port, it will be in the 192.168.1.X range. I suggest you make this a static IP in the routers settings, something like 192.168.1.2, with a gateway of 192.168.1.1 and DNS 192.168.1.1 OR your ISP's DNS servers.

2 - On the modem, forward the appropriate ports to the routers Internet IP address, which if you made it static as above will be 192.168.1.2

3 - On the router, forward the ports to the HTPC IP address (192.168.0.50)

and that should be it, the key is forwarding to the Internet IP address of the router first as it connects your networks together (internet to private) and has its own inbuilt firewall.

    an0nz ,

This is unrelated to Bleazle's issue, but you seem to be the router expert on here and would like to pick your brains if you don't mind.

I currently have an ADSL+ router that has a 4 port gigabit data switch and wireless, but I don't think it handles full duplex gigabit as I only seem to get a max of 350Mb/s (Cat 6 cables). I'm now running MP Server on different computer to the MP client and starting and seeking in TV programs is taking noticably longer.

I also need more ports for more computers around the house, so I would like to purchase a proper 8 port data switch (2Gb/s full duplex) for all computers to connect to, and plug the data switch into the router for internet access.. Will that be simple enough? I've never done anything like this before.

Will wireless computers be able to access the computers on the data switch. My concern is won't. The router is a Linksys WAG320N.

    Many thanks,
    Ross.
