yes well one method, although time consuming, would be to rip the DVDs onto hard drive removing region settings with something like DVD shrink?

I am (was) experiencing one of the problems described in this thread, the one where the DVD starts playing but the screen is blank with only audio audible. I was experimenting with all kinds of codecs, and found that DScaler seems to fix the problem (instead of the default MPV decoder), however I had to set deinterlacing to Automatic (MP Configuration > DirectShow Filter Control > DScaler Video Decoder > Deinterlace mode). When using the default of Force Bob the display was generally messed up - not sure how to describe it, but it was unwatchable. However changing these settings seems to have fixed the problem of a lack of video playback.

Hope this helps some people out there.

ggutenberg: When this problem appears to me, I usually just press fast-forward button and screen kick on in few seconds.. But I don't know, if this "trick" works with every DVDs...

However, thanks for your solution! :)

What's the current state of this now? Last few times I've tried to play a DVD it's actually worked! Anyone else still having problems?

I also experience this problem, now (black screen no sound) even though I am watching ripped dvds in DVD format from HDD

I tried different codecs combinations, but no luck.
Filmerit tells me that there are no errors.
    all other files play fine,

    hints anyone?

    thx

I posted this earlier, so I don't know if you've already tried it, but just in case... The problem you've described is exactly the problem I had: The disc would spin a few times, then stop. All I'd get is a black screen with no sound. No errors reported. I think it's related to the region encoding (even if you're trying to play a region 1 disc in a region one player). Try using DVD Region Free, and make sure you add MediaPortal to the list of programs it associates with. It worked for me.

yeah, like I said I have this issue with DVD from HDD, but nevertheless I changed the region setting accordingly...

    I also updated dx but...
    still no luck.

The funny thing is that the files play absolutely fine with PDVD.

    cheers
