I'm having problems too, will try AnyDVD tonight.
For some DVD's I do see and hear the menu but the navigation is gone....

All DVD's start in the small screen and then I press the red button it goes fullscreen, but then only stop and green start button work....

Hello all, I am new to the forum and MediaPortal and thought I would share my thoughts and experiences on the topic. I am hoping to help out eventually!

I too have had the issue of a black screen with audio using ripped DVD's. My experience has been with only certain DVDs, and only when I have included the menu's (versus just the movie file).

One way that I have fixed this was to change the setting in the configurator under DVD/DVD Player from "Original Source Format" to another setting like "normal" or "4:3 Letterbox". This allowed me to see the menu and play the DVD.

Another way was to try to change the aspect ratio while playing the movie. This didn't work all the time as the movie sometimes locked up MediaPortal.

Win XP SP2
MediaPortal 0.2.3.0
Standard Codecs
Ripped DVDs - No region coding
ATI 850xt

Again - first post...let me know if there is more I can provide.

    OMFG!!!
I found the problem (though I guess this is only MY problem).
It was that: no DVD was playing, only black screen and no sound.

    The Problem was:
The Networkshare (I was referring to in the database) was no longer mapped.
BUT, MP did not tell me anything about a file not beeing present, nor did the logs, THATs the point why I did not find the solution, because everytime I tried to play the according file from HDD, it played in every player but MP.

    I'm really happy, now....:)

    cheers

I too have had problems seeing DVD menus (this is played from the disc, not a ripped HDD file) that were solved by changing from "Original Source Format" to (I think) "Zoom" or "Normal".

This solution worked for me! :D

This issue had been driving me nuts for ages. I have 4 MP machines that share the same DVD library on my storage array. All my machines were experiencing the same issue. This solution fixed it for all of them. :)
I am (was) experiencing one of the problems described in this thread, the one where the DVD starts playing but the screen is blank with only audio audible. I was experimenting with all kinds of codecs, and found that DScaler seems to fix the problem (instead of the default MPV decoder), however I had to set deinterlacing to Automatic (MP Configuration > DirectShow Filter Control > DScaler Video Decoder > Deinterlace mode). When using the default of Force Bob the display was generally messed up - not sure how to describe it, but it was unwatchable. However changing these settings seems to have fixed the problem of a lack of video playback.

Hope this helps some people out there.

Glad I could help. But I'm an attention whore and if you could just click the little "Thanks" button it would make me feel like I did some good in this world (actually, it would just change my counter from 0 to 1, but since I'm the aforementioned whore it would give me warm fuzzies).

Seriously though, glad I could help :)

DScaler didn't work for me :(
I usually have to jump forward, then back to see the video. Its really annoying.

Are you sure you changed the dscaler setting to 'automatic' AND changed the codec in DVD settings to dscaler?

Ya, but I think there's a lot of variables here, not the least of which is your video card and drivers. This particular solution worked on an onboard nVidia 6150 under XP using OLD drivers. Same machine under Vista using new drivers doesn't require this setting and works with defaults. I'm guessing you'll have to experiment to see what works with your particular configuration.
