EPG Help

Guest
I know that there is a lot of threads about EPG issues. I have read them and tried them all with no luck. I cant get the EPG to show up in the tv guide.

Hi there and welcome to MP.

The team is currently working on a number of guides to help people setup EPG, but they are not ready for release yet. In the mean time, this resource might be useful: http://www.avforums.com/forums/home-entertainment-pcs/1602323-mediaportal-setup-guide.html (go to section 7 for EPG).

The instructions may vary depending upon where you live, so the best thing you can do is to get a personal logon for the forum and enter your user details (country, equipment, etc), that way, someone from the same country as you can jump in and give the most direct support.

Thank You for your help. I posted this last night and I didnt realize that I wasn't logged in. I'm in the US. I will look over that link. I hope to get the EPG fixed ASAP. I want to switch over to MediaPortal, I am using WMC but I think MediaPortal has a lot of potential.

    Thanks,
    S.

If you are in the USA, then there are some other resources you can look at too. User @RonD has done some excellent work putting together some USA specific guides for setting up EPG on his Wiki User Page: http://wiki.team-mediaportal.com/User:rond which you should be able to access (thanks again RonD).

Since the whole idea of the Wiki is that users contribute, I would be grateful if you could let me know how you get on with his guide (since I plan to incorporate it into the larger guide I mentioned earlier) and if there are any clarification required to make it optimal for new users.

    Thanks.

Thanks robo, I'll check it out when I get home tonight. I so want to use MP but this epg is the catalyst that's keeping me from using it.

Awesome! I got the EPG to work like a charm. It took a little work. I used the guide that you linked me too and it was awesome. I wish there was a better way to automate the EPG better than how it's laid out but it works like a charm. Is there anyway to list the channel numbers in the guide? right now in order to make everything work I had to change the names of the channels to the station call letters. Also, is there any kind of channel icon packs for the US?

    Thanks,
    S.

a couple of comments from another US MePo ATSC/OTA user. The way MePo handles channel numbers is not the way a US ATSC TV set handles channels.

If you set SelectByIndex = On and ShowChannels = On, you see a list of channel index numbers based on your channel group (AllChannels, Favorites, etc) and is probably the more useful option since these are the "channel numbers" you can use to switch channels with a keyboard/remote.

If you set SelectByIndex = Off and ShowChannels = On, you see the PhysicalChannel (RF) numbers that is not what most US ATSC users expect to see. With this setting you need to use the PhysChan to select channels and I don't think there is a way to select the SubChannel.

On a TV set you tune the ATSC channels using the ATSC Virtual Channels (Chan.SubChan). In my SF area if I want to watch something on Fox, I use channel = 2.1 (Phys = 44), or CBS channel = 5.1 (Phys = 29), etc. Most people in the US never see or know about the PhysChan number. On my Samsung TV I use the ATSC Chan.SubChan to set channels and have to go through about 5 levels of menus to get to a signal strength view that shows the Phys channel and signal levels.

To make life more interesting 2 of my SF area TV stations have 2 PhysChannels so when I scan I get 2 channels for Fox = 2.1 (Phys = 44 or 48) and 2 channels for ABC = 7.1 (Phys = 7 or 35). I get better reception with 2.1(44) and 7.1(7) and have to play games with MePo and the TV sets to make sure I'm using the better channels.

Since I had set up my channels many years ago, I simply made a list of the call letters/channel names and the digital channel/sub-channel numbers (not the physical channel numbers). deselected both items in MP Config/TV and manually named and sorted the channels in TV Config for my groups. I don't key in channel numbers for channel switching, It is far too easy with the remote to use the mini-guide ... my wife doesn't like the mini-guide, so she uses the full guide to change channels. We hardly even use channel up/channel down buttons on the remote. If you prefix your channel names with the digital numbers you can probably sort by name in the channel group sections of TV Config for proper EPG sorted names. MP doesn't really care. If there are any duplicate channels, I just deselect one channel in the master list, so it doesn't show up in the EPG.

Below is my EPG for the Milwaukee Area.

Since there are so many broadcast markets in the US, it is difficult to get icons for any one market (especially if there are numerous independent broadcasters or specialty sub channels). I know some attempt by users to create/assemble icons for their market, but most major markets still do not have icon packs. I don't have any icons for that reason ... I've been pretty lazy at hunting/creating icons to use for the Milwaukee area, there is an icon pack available for Madison, WI. I'm in the middle but get lousy Madison reception.

I've never gotten into the icons, a few US web sites I've seen to get some icons, no clean/simply "icon pack" so you have to do some work

    http://www.lyngsat-logo.com/
for CA the following has a lot of stations
    http://www.lyngsat-logo.com/tvcountry/us-ca_1.html,

if you goto wiki and search for the station ID you can often find a icon/logo you can grab, for example
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/KTVU

logopedia also has a lot of tv channel logos/icons, search for a station, for example
    http://logos.wikia.com/wiki/KTVU

and now that I looked at the wiki for channel logos, these sites are already listed,

There is a conflict as you have said between WinTV ad MP TV. MP TV takes over the Hauppauge HVR-1265 card. I may be even getting more channels with it. The Titan TV worked great until last year. I used to use the grabber but a few years back it disappeared on FreeSat DVBS. That is when I changed to EPG Collector. The extra benefit is that it collects from the Sky platform so it will give EPG for all the FreeSat channels plus the unencrypted movie channels on the Sky platform. It also allows me to pick the channels dedicated...
