enabling dvbsubtitles shows me that pin connected to MP's DVBsub3 and indeed missing lines.
When I tested this yesterday, it became apparent that it is the TeleText setting that enables the subtitles in the test file, and not the DVB setting. Internally they might be treated the same (or in a very similar fashion), with only minor differences.

Thanks everyone, I'll test it out when time permits (recording laptop needs to be rebuilt first - TvService not starting when booting and x64 client does not support TvWishList).

build will be ready at the regular places
I downloaded the GitHub build , this one:
    "MediaPortalSetup_x64_1.39.000_2026-10-29-20-06.exe"

    It installed without problem. (y)
I am pleased to report that the subtitle problem with the test file is now fixed. (y) :)

I did notice one oddity, which may be a quirk of my system. When stopping play (via the "B" key on the keyboard), it takes around 5 seconds for the key to be actioned (that is, the video keeps playing for around 5 seconds before the "Videos" panel is redisplayed). I looked in the log to see if there were any entries that showed a circa 5-second delay, but I did not notice anything unusual. The delay is not consistent, sometimes being shorter (2 seconds), although the delay does seem to be related to the type of file being played. The subtitle test file (HD) and a UK HD file were always around 5 seconds, whereas a UK SD file was always around 2 seconds. But three files is not a comprehensive test, and perhaps this is expected behaviour.

Am I allowed to access the test builds? I assume it will be a few weeks before this fix makes it into a public release.
I need the 32 bit version. I promise not to report any unrelated issues!

ofcourse! trying to find urls of proper buildresults but unsuccessful (most likely due to not have coffee yet)
What i would like to ask you to test: does regular teletext still work ok? (No extra or missing lines at top/bottom)
    Also check with double height

I have that for quite a while (even before MP1.39 release) too but not yet annoyed enough by it to start investigating

The detail about the first release being 2006 lines up with my own sense of the timeline, so I would trust that over the rougher estimate. On the original issue, trimming a section that actually contains subtitles is a sensible way to narrow it down: if the first line is missing only near the very top of the file, that points more to the cut boundary than to the subtitle rendering itself. Worth testing a clip taken from the middle as well, to see whether the top line still disappears there.

I find it very difficult to find anything on GitHub. I think that this is the 32-bit build, but this link may not be accessible to you if you don't sign in to GitHub (it is free to create an account on GitHub):

    https://github.com/MediaPortal/MediaPortal-1/actions/runs/40942844454/artifacts/12929042080
That seems to be for the logs, but your screen grab was enough for me to find the setup file (next item down):

That GitHub environment is rather overwhelming - my last formal code review involved comparison printouts and gathering around a table in a meeting room with red pens & highlighter markers!

I'm not sure I can help with this as I don't know what regular teletext is supposed to look like and wasn't aware they still broadcast it.

I have watched recordings from all 5 Aussie broadcasters, and they all seem to use the teletext type of subtitles. Text is normally shown near the bottom of the screen and during opening credits at the top or in the middle. All text was visible and in sync with the audio. I could not find any settings that would change the font, size or style of text for these subtitles - I assume the Video settings are only for external subtitle files and the TV Teletext setting for full page regular teletext. The font is different when played in VLC though.
