Flickering Tv-guide and other overlays with EVR enabled (7 Viewers)

I have now tried a new way to get away from the flicker problem: I tried the latest ffdshow-mt build (mt=Multithreading). You can use the built-in mpeg2 decoder, double the frame rate and use an highly-optimized deinterlacer filter (yadif). With this you always get 50fps and the video is as smooth as using DXVA and the picture quality is also very nice (looks like vector adaptive hardware-acceleration). The latest ffdshow is optimized for multi-core CPUs, so the cpu usage ist only about 10-12% with a Phenom 9750 with Cool & Quiet activated (running with 1,2 GHz). I am very pleased with the results.

Codecs - MPEG2 - use libmpeg2 - DVD decoding checked
Directshow control - merit - very high
Deinterlacing - double framerate - Method yadif

For HD I still use the Cyberlink H264-filter with DXVA. There is definately no flicker with this filter.

But now I have a problem if I want to switch from a MPEG2- to a HD-Channel. Sometimes the video is not displayed after a switch - but I can hear the audio of the new selected channel. The graph of the old channel is not closed and the new one is not build properly. If I close the graph manually and restart the channel - everything runs fine again. Maybe this is a bug?

Everyone not using Catalyst 8.12 and suffering from some issues (flicker or black image in previews) should definitely consider to update now.

Just try it out: Use FFDShow for SD and the Cyberlink H264-filter for HD. Sometimes the channel switching between SD and HD-channels won't work. The picture freezes and you can hear only the audio of the new selected channel.

FFDshow shouldnt be used as video codec for TV playback (it has known issues).

I have really no problems with FFDShow itself (it works well). The channel freezing between SD and HD channels also happens if I use other filters for SD. If I use the two Cyberlink filters for SD and HD together there are no problems.

Just tried the 8.12 drivers on my system (see spec in my profile), DXVA is working on x264 encoded files (no subtitles obviously).

I'm on XP and use VMR9 so never had flickering problem caused by graphics drivers.

It's taken so long to get DXVA working I don't think I'll ever change them!

So basically until now we can summarize:

After my first post reporting success in dxva playback...as well as fixing very dark 'now playing' thumbnails in StreamedMP....I've found a 'show stopper' in 8.12 which has forced me back to 8.5.

It seems related to mironicus' problem. Although MediaPortal actually crashes when I try to switch to a HD channel. I'll gather some logs and post them here, I'm certain it's a driver issue though because as soon as I rolled-back to 8.5 HD channels and switching between SD/HD works fine.

EDIT: Was preparing logs to show the problem here, and now I'm seeing the same behaviour in 8.5 catalysts.

I'm seeing 'System Events' caused by ati2mtag titled "DVD_OV" and EVENT ID:62464 (weirdly also showing as 1073804288 in MP log collector) with description 'The description for Event ID ( 62464 ) in Source ( ati2mtag ) cannot be found. The local computer may not have the necessary registry information or message DLL files to display messages from a remote computer. Having a google around there is very little information out there...some of it quite old. There doesn't seem to be a answer at all but it does seem a few things in common:
- ATI graphics
- Cyberlink codec (though I've tried with many, many others with same results - arcsoft, ffdshow, coreavc, divxh264 and more)
- Strangest one - Similar motherboard to my own (see sytem spec)

Logs are attached fyi, this is with 8.5 catalyst but I had same behaviour with 8.12.

yes. I have installed ATi Catalyst package 8.12 (final) and the flickering of MP GUI is gone on my setup!

Since my first post I tested the setup a week long. There is some flicker still though... but very very very rarely. And just only 1 "blinking" (if scrolling EPG), no real "flickering" (several blinks after eachother).

may I ask:
1. if you double the frame rate why do you need deinterlacing at all? (practically you do a bob deinterlacing with doubling the fps). Doubling the fps means everything is fluid but you loose vertical resolution. Thats why this cannot match with adaptive deinterlacing. But very good for football...
2. where do you activate yadif? in ffdshow settings?

1) If you just use bob deinterlacing you still have the jumping bobbing interlace effect. If you make a full deinterlace with yadif, the quality of the output is as good as using the best deinterlacing methods from ATI/NVIDA cards (vector adaptive). This is also a good solution for people with a low end graphics card (like Intel GMA 950 and 3100).

Update: If I disable Hardware acceleration on the H264-Cyberlink filter the channel switching between SD (FFDShow) and HD (Cyberlink) works every time!

even after a (clean) install of ATI drivers 8.12 ?
