But will the problems with the timings with Mediaportal and multi-core processors ever be solved?
I also had randomly GPU crashes while switching between HDTV-channels with different resolutions (720P/1080i) - they don't happen anymore. So this is all connected to the timing problems it seems.

I'm still 99% sure that the flickering issue is caused just by the fact that z-ordering is not used / implemented in MP side and that will cause ATI's driver / GPU to render textures by "random" order which is visible as flickering.
If you are seeing driver crash (in Vista) or BSOD (in XP) it's most likely caused by ATI's own driver side bugs.
I can really reproduce this - running Mediaportal normal with all cores the gpu crashes after several switches between HDTV-channels. Running on a single core this has not happened yet - everything seems very stable now.
I bought a Radeon 4550 because of this crashes. The 4550 does not crash but sometimes I got a black screen and I only could hear the audio from the channel. Switching back to another channels solved this. The Radeon 3200 crashed every time in this case.
I already returned the 4550 because you'll only get Bob & Weave (with Aero switched on) on 1080i-material. With a Radeon 3200+Phenom I have more deinterlacing options (it's much better). You really need a Radeon 4650 and above to get the same/better quality as a Radeon 3200+Phenom.
Now I am quite happy. No crashes (and no black screens - every channel switch is a success) and no more flicker - and only because Mediaportal is running with a single core. I have a Phenom 9750 and even on one core it can handle 720P videos in software very nicely. Even 1080p runs, but there is a limit (I could also use an external player to solve this). As long the whole problem is not solved I can live with that solutions. There is also no need to buy a better graphic card because the quality of the Radeon 3200+Phenom is very decent.
Still doesn't make it a MP bug. Driver crashes are almost every time caused by driver side bugs.

I have bought a ATI Radeon HD 4550 and i have FULL deinterlacing options with Aero on.. my system is 780G + x2 4850e (see my signature for full details). I bought the GFX card because it was the cheaper alternative to a phenom regarding deinterlacing, added bonus is that it has it own memory (more for my system), has 7.1 LPCM support and is rumoured to handle the more advanced bluray features without trouble. i don't get why that gfx card did not work for you. You don't need a 4650 at all do get these options. even a HD4350 is said to be sufficient for the deinterlacing part.
ps. i still have the flicker with the HD4550 but it's very minimal on Blue3Wide but no difference with the HD3200 in that department.

The only difference between our systems: I am using Vista x64. Maybe the Catalyst drivers are not allowing it yet. Without Aero all deinterlacing options are available for me. I also made a clean install and deleted the catalyst drivers with Driver Cleaner. Still the same behaviour. However I don't need the card anymore as it has no advantages for me.

What about the z-order stuff now? Are you sure that no one from the MP dev team is interesed to add this and fix the flickering?
Come on guys, plz stay on top with MP.
Adding z-order is not an easy thing as it would require every 3D surface to have depth data, so basicly it would require lot of work to get done.
I myself have Nvidia 9500 so I have no plans (or even enough D3D nor MP GUI engine knowledge) to start dig into the issue.
