Thanks for the quick reply...

The core service shouldn't be using much CPU at all, so something is wrong. Have you actually seen this high CPU usage? And if so, could you relate it to some activity?...

I've been looking at the Task manager - I'll go grab a screen shot and post it in about 10 minutes...

...The only problem I have is that I never get to watch everything I record since I'm too busy with improving For The Record ;) :D

haha - I've got the same problem and all I'm doing is playing around with some skin files which is nothing compared to your efforts!!

EDIT: Screenshots attached - taken while recording two channels at once. In the first one you can see that there isn't much free RAM available while MP is running - a few seconds after it fully closes the free RAM increases to about 50% (see 2nd screen shot) so it looks like I should add some more RAM (right?). As you can see the CPU usage remains pretty high though..

The 3rd shot shows the processes running sorted by memory usage (the top process and the highlighted process is my screenshot app plus "customizer.exr" isn't normally running either - that's the RAM monitor so ignore them).

I think I've ruled out MP itself being the problem because we tried watching an AVI recording with MP turned off tonight (using Windows MediaPlayer) and it was still a bit jitterey..

Any ideas?

Also, has anyone else noticed the problem highlighted in the Blue3Wide screen shot? (also happens in BleazleWide). I don't use this view but it would be good to be able to sort this for those that do..

High cpu has been found before specifically with FTR, last time it was a database causing the problem, ended up deleting both the FTR and MpTvDb db's and afterwards all was fine, it was obviously something in the MP db, that FTR did not like.

You really do need 2gb of ram, personally unless x64, think a total waste going above that.

The high CPU is clearly shown, but you failed to grab a screenshot of the actual processes running. Specifically what process(es) is/are consuming all this CPU power?

Make sure you turn on the checkbox at the bottom to show processes from all users.

I'll just grab 1 GB of RAM for now then, thanks for the pointer.

Can't do it now - the wife is home - in front of the TV :( Doesn't the 3rd screen shot show the processes running/using the memory though? If that's not it I'm not sure where to look - any pointers?

    Thanks

The third screen does indeed show the processes and they are all using just about 0% CPU, including ForTheRecord.WindowsService.exe which is the process hosting the core services.

So where is/are the process(es) that are using the CPU?

This will be a big indicator of what may be going wrong.

FTR Newbie - standby / wakeup

I recently installed the latest version of FTR - congratulations to the developer(s) for a great job, it does exactly what I need it to do!

I have a query about standby and wakeup:

Wake-up is fine. I've disabled tvserver and MP powerscheduler plugins and rely instead on FTR to wake-up my PC for recordings which it does ok.

For stand-by, FTR doesn't help. I'm currently relying on XP power options to put my PC to sleep after periods of inactivity. This is nowhere near as useful as powerscheduler as I can't tell it not to enter standby when certain important processes are running e.g. I might be in the middle of an MS Word document, take some time away to read some books, and then lose my work! I also use my PC as a server and stream media to my living room set up - this will be interrupted too. Can I do anything to tell my PC not to enter standby for certain processes? Otherwise, I can't really use FTR.

    Thanks,

    DJM

I don't quite follow since in this case you'd wake up your machine and continue typing the Word document that's still there :)

Perhaps there are other tools that do what you want, but I definitely consider this to be out of the scope of For The Record.

If there is activity, the windows power settings should not shutdown, but in the case of using as a server you would need to enable Wake-on-LAN - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

    Thanks for the replies guys.

I've tried using WOL before but my network card kept randomly waking up my PC all the time - I'll have another look into this though.

FTR seems good enough to warrant further investigation into these things... Mediaportal should definitely incorporate FTR into its infrastructure.

Any news on this? Your third screen does indeed show 52% CPU usage, but the process responsible for this is off-screen. Can you try this again?, Click on the CPU column to sort on CPU usage so the top consumers end up at the top.

I'd really like to know what's causing the CPU usage. Two fingers have been vaguely pointed at For The Record so I'd like to get to the bottom of this ;)
