What to do when the internal refresh rate changer doesn't work

1. Use 12noon display changer to change refresh rates

Mediaportal supports running an external program or .bat file to change the refresh rate. In situations where the internal refresh rate changer has failed people have had success using 12noon's display changer.

Download + extract 12noon.zip to c:\

Run setup.cmd

Try testing some of the .bat files to see which ones work on your PC.

Setup MP Configuration Action field as per screenshot

The example uses 24, 50 and 60hz as they are supported by most TVs, it is a good starting point.
If 24hz.bat isn't supported then use 50hz.bat instead.
If 23.976hz is supported by your TV then you should use it for cinema 23.976fps

2. Video Card Profiles with different refresh rates

You can also create different profiles for each refresh rate in Nvidia control panel or AMD Catalyst Control Center and then create a .bat file which switches between each profile.

AFAIK you need the DXVA copy back if you want to use postprocessing (eg. for upscaling)

I always assumed that native dxva are producing a smoother playback. This setting never resulted in problems on my systems.
But to be honest, I've barely seen movies with VC1 codec so maybe I just missed the issue.

You're right. Thats is for some maybe a good argument. In my opinion bad source stays bad. Upscaling dosen't change anything.

@tourettes - can you please look over at some stage, let me know if any major mistakes, or suggested changes.

In partucular:

1. If we set v-sync in display settings to application "off/on, unless application specifies" will it turn v-sync on in MP. ie, does MP ask for v-sync

2. Is force v-sync needed in display settings if we use v-sync in MPAR? Does it cause any harm?

3. Do you have thoughts on 0-255 16-235 we have the following settings we can change
Video Card Pixel Format 4:4:2 vs 4:4:4 vs Full RGB vs Limited RGB
Video Card Display Settings - Colour space 0-255 vs 16-235
LAV Video Decoder - Use 16-235 vs 0-255 vs 'untouched'
TV Settings - Use 0-255 vs 16-235[DOUBLEPOST=1371040259][/DOUBLEPOST]

Yes you are right. I haven't bothered to discuss up-scaling It's becoming less common as everything is HD now. Generally with the h264 video codec it's all 720P/1080P, so don't need any fancy up-scaling filters, the GPU is enough.

So, as far I understand it copyback have an advantage in playback of VC-1 files. Right?

I also forgot to mention that LAV isn't used with VC-1 even though it's set to VC-1 under codec settings, if you look under formats in LAV:Video settings:Format, you see it automatically disables itself and uses MS codec for VC-1. I've read that this is because LAV has playback issues with VC-1.
