There are different versions of the SRM5100 dongle, most of them don't have the connections (jack plugs) or the IR Blasters included. I don't know if the circuits are there and just not connected up.
If you can find an transceiver version, even an earlier version 2 one (i.e. the black one from the the older silver remote) or a non-Microsoft one (as long as it's MCE Compatible), it should work with your SRM 5100 Remote.
There are places where you can but the insides of a transceiver (it's a phillips part) to incorporate in a HTPC, if you want.

The only configuration that is certain to work is when the MP client and MP server are from the same release.
It is sometimes possible to use MP clients from a release that is different to the MP server, but whether it works depends on the specific changes that were made between the two releases.
