I had this problem with 4550 in vista only. It went away when I switched to XP.

I have no tearing with Aero + EVR .. if I disable Aero there was tearing on my HD3200.. i haven't checked this on the 4550 though

I made several updates to the first post.. i changed the way my remote works, dropped IR Server Suite and just used the IMON Manager - works pretty much the same but without the extra hassle of IR Server Suite that i find is more complex then using just IMON Manager (which i already need on my system anyway because of the LCD driver). I also gave some more insight in how i handle my codec configuration.

thank you guys for your responses. I am curious, what resolution are you guys using? Mine is set to 1360x768 and the refresh rate is now at 30i and I think it may have solved the tearing...Before when I had my monitor enabled and my lcd tv cloned, it gave me the option for 60 hertz and even 75 I believe, which may have caused the tearing for me... I am wondering what resolution and refresh rate is optimal.
I was also wondering if you guys have this other problem I am facing. When I switch inputs on my tv, say from my xbox input to the htpc input, the screen flashes for a bit before settling. Kind of annoying, wondering if it was a video card problem that you guys had encountered.

As for windows xp, I assume you are using sp3? I am reluctant to use xp because I have grown fond of vista and the video quality is great. Can you comment on the video quality in vista vs. xp?

What is optimal really depends on the video source.. if you are watching a PAL source optimal is 50hz, if you watch a NTSC source 60hz, if you are watching a blu-ray (well most of the time) 24hz (or multiples of the mentioned resolutions). Mediaportal will support dynamic refresh rates in the future (the current SVN version already has this).
The resolution is something that you will have to decide on. Just go with what looks good on your setup. The HD standards are 1280x720 or 1920x1080 .. these will look best on my display... my display does have 1366x768 pixels but when i set the 1360x768 it doesn't look near as good as when using one of the standard resolutions.
I'm sorry to say (because you find it annoying) the flashing is perfectly normal as your display is just adjusting to a new signal.

I'm not really a Trust fanatic (far from it actually) but i have the same keyboard as the Trust one (only a different brand but exactly the same design). So far i like it very much and it's much more affordable as the other solutions

first let me say a big thanks for your great article. I had planned to build a HTPC for some time - coming from a similar background with using XBMC on Xbox for all my media streaming. Your article was the one that finally got me going and I started building around christmas in my free time (being in the computer science field for work sometimes makes it harder to do the same in the free time ) My LCD TV arrived on Friday so the HTPC is in full use now. Everything is fine so far, a couple of things though which I hope you can help with:
I am using a Logitech Harmony 885 remote - mapped as MCE - for remote controlling. After having a look at the IR Suite I decided to go with the IMON approach which works quite well. Like many other people I do have problems using the MiniDisplay plugin and the IMon software at the same time...IMon Frontview is set to start always...remote works perfectly. If i enable MiniDisplay the display usually works flawlessly in MP (showing track info etc.) BUT the remote stops working. I have tried every combination of settings I could think of, could you post a screenshot of the MiniDisplay and IMon settings you are using? I am out of ideas...
I also use your Trailers plugin - which is quite nice - I can't get to play 720p content to play without stuttering though. All other 1080p and 720p content plays fine though. What filter/codec path is used by the plugin?
Also you changed your HD decoder to the PowerDVD codecs, would you say that that is something to definitely recommend? Has your decoding quality increased drastically?
I hope these questions are not too much of a hassle.

Sorry, currently MiniDisplay is not working correctly also for me.. My remote works but my LCD is blank when MediaPortal is active. I forgot to mention this in my post. I'm looking for a solution but i did not have time to investigate further.. if i find something i'll update
It kinda depends on your MediaPortal Codec configuration + DirectShow Merits. have you tried the MediaLooks plugin for MediaPortal?
Well i only user the PowerDVD codecs for TV.. they are definately the best when watching TV.
For all other content i use MPC Video Decoder.
There's a lot of use with this problem and it's such a shame it's still not fixed. I believe it's to do with the firmware of the VFD/LCD. I have a VFD in my Antec Fusion which works perfectly. I have the exact same build on my Antec Fusion Micro with LCD and I can't use Imon (MCE remote) and Minidisplay at the same time.
I have made some progress in terms of diagnosing the issue. It's definitely something to do with when the plugin fires up. Alt and tabbing back into Imon and resetting the remote to MCE makes it all work fine, so the question is, what is happening at start up to block the remote???
