There is excellent support for the iMon VFD, check out the plugins forum. JoeDalton has made a plugin which supports all kinds of external displays.
It's quite a reading excercise, so take your time:

maybe setting loglevel to debug might pinpoint the difference between normal and stuck?
Preferable with as much disabled as possible
also try to see if anything is happening during stuck for the mediaportal process(resource monitor, disk activity, cpu usage, anything)
maybe other programs competing for resouces?

Since over a year my MP sometimes stucks while showing the welcome screen. It started once a week now it happens every second time...

It used to only support m3u files containing all the channels, but now you can use a m3u8 too.
Usually you get an m3u8 from your iptv provider, but there are also some that can be found on the internet
