Well, I know I'm using PDVD 8's h.264 codec, and I belive sjeffrey, ixian, and WileE are all using it too. If you install the demo, it should install the codecs. Even if the demo expires, that is just the program expiring, the codecs can still be used. So, it's up to you to decide if you want to purchase the program or not. I'd install the demo first, try the codecs and see if they work for you. If you go back a page or 2 in this forum you should see my post of what codecs I'm currently using, and I'm pretty sure everyone else is using the same thing except maybe a different audio codec. Something ixian pointed out though, is that the demo for PDVD8 is extremely hard to find as PDVD9 is out now and Cyberlink is trying to push that on consumers.

Honestly sheish, your best bet is to find the PDVD8 demo or go spend the $9.95 on an OEM copy and install it. Save you a lot of hassle of having to just extract out the couple of files. Not to mention, if you want Blu-ray support in the future, you'll want an external player that can handle it. As of right now, MP doesn't have a internal player. Just my .02.

    Thanks Chesh,
I agree on getting the whole PDVD 8 installed, etc. But, I was wondering if I can still play my 1080i H.264 TS videos using the PDVD H.264 codec from the MP 101 player? If it can, I would love to get the PDVD 8 bought/installed on my setup. But, the uncertainty is whats bothering me. Will I be able to try the H.264 codec from the trial version? I thought one couldn't, hence my questions from the previous post :).

    ...sheish...

The trial version installs the h.264 codec, and the codecs work trial or not.

I have not switched from 720p to 1080i on my setup yet. But 720p plays just fine.

    chesh/ixian,
Thanks for the inputs, that makes it easier. I will try that out tonight. I will do some lookup for the PDVD 8 trail version.

Not thread related, but I just noticed now that chesh and sheish are different people

No wonder I was confused from that last few posts, I was thinking, how can he answer his own question!:p

Ok so I'm trying to solve the mystery of my sound stuttering mostly when the channel is Dolby Digital.
I was playing with the source code yesterday trying to figure out how things work. I'm starting to understand why most of you are not having issues. As I understand most of you are using analog 2 ch. audio instead of optical AC3. What I noticed last night is if I change from a station that broadcast only in 2 channels to another station with 2 channels audio the "bling light" on the HD-PVR stays on. When I change to or from a station broadcasting in Dolby Digital then the "bling light" shuts off for 3 seconds and turns back on. It seems to me that the HD-PVR is kind of rebuilding it's graph when using AC3 and DD which screws up the timeshifting for a few seconds.

The other thing I noticed is that when we are changing channels the timeshift only pauses and then resumes. I know my Bell PVR used to start a new timeshift file after every channel change. I'm not sure which behaviour is the "correct" one.

What I was trying to do is to get the timeshift to stop before tuning to a new channel and then start a new timeshift after the tuning. This would allow the HD-PVR to redetect the correct AC3 format(?) and the timeshift file to be clean. I still haven't figured how to do this successfully yet. One thing I have experimented with was to add delays in the code to force TVServer to wait a few seconds after the channel change before looking for audio/video stream. For those who looked at the code before, all I did was change the 1 second delay in the OnNotify to 6 seconds. This worked for the most part but not all the time, sometimes after a few seconds/minutes it would start to stutter again but this could be do to the timeshift file changing.

If any of you have some insight or ideas on what could be done that would be great.
Am I correct to assume that none of us are successfully using AC3/DD with not stuttering?

    Chesh,
Thanks the link, I searched for about 30mins before I saw this link :). So, I installed it and I could see the codec from MP config. When I played a 1080i H.264 video, it played much better than with the Coreavc codec(it was choppy with coreavc), but this has some other wierd behavior, the video is a little shaky....I mean the video plays smooth(from frame-2-frame), the audio/video are in sync, but the video looks a little shaky. I do not know how to explain this. I checked the graph and it looked correct. On a side note, the same video plays without any issue from the PDVD player though. So, I do not know if there are any other tweeks/tricks that I need to make it work from MP player. I was reading other posts in the thread and so the Dynamic refresh rate option from MP config. I will try that out.

Once I have a working env, I will put together a how-to guide for this.

One other question, I had SAF installed on my setup and it suggested to be at Catalyst8.5 for my ati 3200 chipset. Is it ok to move on to the latest driver/catalyst version?

    ...sheish...

I'm using 9.4 with the 4850 and have no issues with video. All DXVA works for me.
8.5 was recommended when they broke DXVA and I believe 9.3 was the first version after to work properly for XP.
9.5 is out but I'm waiting for others to have feedback before tackling this.

Try playing with the video decoder settings in PDVD8. I remember having to change some things in there to get it working. I also think I turned off DXVA and had a huge quality difference and no more stutter. Worth a try for testing purposes.

    thanks sjeffrey/chesh,
I will try both the suggestions and will update later tonight.
