The problem with Open Source is the same with Democracy. Everybody gets to talk. Not everybody gets to work.

But, nobody (in his right mind) would change Democracy for something else. Same with Open Source.

We just have to get through the difficulties and keep the good part.

    My 10 euro cents. :D

As someone above said its a hobby, MP is by no means for the complete noob, but once configured can be used by one.

The most important thing to me is that pretty much it does what I want it to, play videos, tvguide (updated using windows scheduler and the update.bat in the xmltv directory), will dl and load torrents to azureus and will monitor those torrents on a remote pc (many thanks fcsobel), gives me my weather and when I'm homesick that of my homeland, gives me an excellent fron end to my music collection if a bit slow at times. Since I put MP on my machine I rarely watch cable TV, either I'm watching videos or listening to music. In the last six months I have listened to more music than I had done in the previous 5 years. Come the new year I will be building a new machine with a much faster CPU a second tuner card (even though I don;t watch much TV I have still had the occasional clash with 3 shows at the same time grrrrr!), and a much better audio setup. Next step will be rigging up an external dvd-rw in the living room connected by firewire to the PC in the basement, allowing me to get rid of my ageing dvd living room player.

Mp is not perfect but for me its the best I've tried.

Just what I like to hear; comments with nothing to back them up. Do you guys even read the change log? The amount of bugs that have been fixed is pretty substantial.

Not picking on you or the OP, but why is it that these "I'm leaving MP" topics *always* turn into "the MP devs should be doing more to make MP more stable/Make the documentation better/Make this or that easier to use".

MediaPortal is an open source project. If you don't like the way something works, roll up your sleeves and pitch in. If you can't write code write documentation. If you can't do either have the decency and respect to understand that after a long day at work NO ONE likes to hear that what they are doing for *free* isn't being done fast enough or well enough.

Gotta tell you that these posts in general are pretty discouraging and de-motivating.

    Steve

I just want to elaborate a little on my previous post.

The purpose of my post was simply to explain why I left Media Portal and I want to make sure that ALL the devs know that I personally, have nothing but respect for the job they've done. I think that MP is an incredible project and the work done/being done on it is top notch.

For my own personal use however, MP was causing me more grief then functionality and I couldn't justify the headache any longer.

I still plan on monitoring the project and perhaps will switch back sometime in the future. For now however, Beyond TV fits my needs best.

I think the devs do an absolute terrific job, and they created according to me the best HTPC software available. I’ve been with MP since 0.1.0.6, and I’m going to stick with MP for a long long time.

Before I became a MP convert I was unfaithful with MS Media centre, Power Cinema, Meedio, and some others I tried. Are they more stable? Not for me. Are they more expensive? Oh yes they are. Do they have great support like MP? No, don’t even come close.

Maybe it’s me, but I never had a problem configuring Media Portal, never found it hard to do.

I’m running MP on 2 computers without a glitch.

On my main HTPC I still run 01.1.1, why you may ask. Well it runs so damn stable and works perfect on a dual monitor (TV and monitor) environment, allows us to do e-mail, browse the web, or edit video files with VideoRedo, or create DVD’s with Ulead DVD Creator while recording 3 or 4 channels and watching recorded TV on the big screen all at the same time. This computer runs 24/7; the wife and kids know the software inside out. Never had the need to upgrade this to a newer version, so why should I.

My second HTPC always runs the latest MP + SVN. This computer runs perfect. Occasionally their might be a glitch, but I’m the only person to blame for that, I’m the one fooling around with the latest SVN’s (that’s half the fun of having a MP powered HTPC).

I’m a strong believer that most of the problems with MP are caused between the seat and keyboard, or by wanting to much of the computer, running to many other programs, filling your HDD with shareware programs.

Devs, please don’t get discouraged by a few nasty forum posts, think about the many happy users like me (and family), and all the happy hours in front of the big screen or listening to music your coding is giving us.

    My 2 Aussie cents.

I have to strongly disagree with you on this one. My HTPC computer does only one thing......Media. The only display connected is my TV and the only input is my Firefly remote. My HTPC was setup *JUST* to run MP and I had issues.

No shareware, always optimized......it was a solid machine, except for MP.

I've installed BTV overtop of my original MP install and BTV has run roclk solid as well which shows me that the Windows installation is fine and it really was MP causing the problems.

I've read this posting with interest, as I work in the technical support team of a software company.

First: you don't tend to hear from the majority of people, who are running your software perfectly well. It's an unfortunate fact of human nature that we complain (OR constructively criticise - most people here seem to have tempered their criticism with positive comments about the work of the developers), but don't always report positive experiences quite so readily.

Second: PCs are so diverse in nature, owing to the huge amount of components available, that some people will have problems running software and there's not much that can be done about that. If everyone was running exactly the same hardware configuration, it would be easier to produce more 'stable' software.

Third: It's an unfortunate fact that every piece of software will have bugs and some bug fixes will introduce other bugs (also, new functionality will!). It's just something we have to put up with, because software comes from a) businesses trying to make money, or b) people offering their own spare time to develop projects like this.

I first installed Media Portal last year and was blown away by the features, look and performance. I couldn't believe it was free.

A friend of mine works for MS and runs MCE2005. He bitches about it regularly, but then again, he's actually paid for it!

I think the developers are doing an awesome job. Of course, there are problems, but users just have to be patient and stick to reporting the facts when logging bugs.
