Just a short note:

No team dev is coding plugins since months, all stuff that appears here on the forums or on the main website has been done by people not being part of the team.

No dev is creating skins. This is gfx guys' work.

Just wanted to clear that up and stress that we're doing nothing but fixing bugs and tweaking MP since MONTHS! Thus all those release candidates. If someone says: The devs are having more fun coding plugins & skins he's not really facing the facts. We even removed some plugins to enhance stability.

I personally like MP's features and looks. I have a stability problem with mine though, and not quite sure where it's coming from. It crashes about once a day. i mainly use it to watch movies with ffdshow postprocessing output at 1080P to my tv. So I'm not doing anything overly complicated (that I know of :p ), yet it still crashes. One of these days, I'll actually get around to finding out what's causing the crashes... maybe even post a log or two here in the forums...but until then, I still enjoy it (and I'll excersize the use of the reset button  ).

I haven't d/l the beyondtv or Sagetv trials yet b/c I know they don't provide the features that I use in mediaportal (mounting DVD iso's, etc) without having to purchase yet ANOTHER software package from them to add the missing functionality that should be there to begin with.

MP really does kick ass. Movie Trailers, Weather (including sat and radar images), movies, pictures, radio, tv, etc...every time a friend comes over they're drooling over the setup I have (and no...I don't tell them it crashes on me once a day b/c I think it really boils down to either a driver problem or software incompatability somewhere and no direct fault of MP itself).

As for setup...I didn't find it hard at all. The only thing it took was a little time. If you call about 30 minutes including the channel scan a long time.
The only thing I think it's missing besides the rest of the bug fixes is an EPG for the US. A lot of MP seems to be geared to the rest of the world and not the US...but then again...from what I've read most of the devs aren't in the US...so it only makes sense

so to the devs...awsome work. I've written some programs in the past including a small multithreaded one...but I can't touch what you guys are doing with MP and for what it's become it deserves more recognition.

Well, one thing I agree with; it seems that fixing bugs is not pri. one. I.
if you would read the changelog you would notice that no "fancy" features have been added, but many many bugs have been fixed druing the past months.

    Okay said:
I've personaly reported to bugs (RSS and shutdown) - no answer.

Take a look at no. of replyes in the bug cat.

"Its not working" is not a bugreport!

before you post a bugreport you should better read this:
    https://forum.team-mediaportal.com/viewtopic.php?t=6444
    https://forum.team-mediaportal.com/viewtopic.php?t=6421

if you do not submit the required info and logs, we can not do anything.

had a strange feeling too, but after a complete re-install..

...i´ve got the best mediacenter i ever had!!!

let me explain: i´m using mp since 0.1.3, trying to test the most builds because i´m a little kind of freak (if you ask my girlfriend, at least ;-)). my personal goal is to be independent from monopolists, as far as i can.

after the introduction of the 0.2´s, many problems seemed to arrive at mp and the functionality and i also have had some days, when i thought that there are more troubles than bugfixing adn i should use mce for example. at the end, mp wasn´t able to open tv without hanging, nor playing videos or audio files.

i tried mce, and: nothing at all, mce didn´t even find my tv cards and restarted the pc...

so i decided to go the hard way and reinstall the whole thing. after a weekend i´m happy now with my 0.2 RC4 and some of the latest builds.

mp is starting and working nearly perfectly, the epg configuraiton is very good now only a handful of little problems but: mp is definately not in final release state!!! so if i´m having a look at some sw producers that are selling products for money and the released versions they sell i just have to say:

thank you all guys for your private time spent to develop such a great thing for us all!

mp resp. it´s devs cannot be responsible for the underlying operating system or driver problems with it.

so if some1 of us is taking part of testing (and more cannot be done in a non release state i think) we should do what testers have to: giving positive and constructive feedback to achieve the goal, having the best media center and that with open source!

    cheers and another thanx, LX.

    Hope your wife/girlfriend dosn't mind :) but I digress.

To each his own... To be honest I have no problems with people picking other software, but do it silently. Don't bitch about the free service and product on the way out the door.
Come to the forums for help, to help, or suggestions.
How much easier can the set up be? Big flash arrows that point to the "scan for channels button", maybe a James Earl Jones voice walking you through every step?

For me the worst part of the setup was XMLTV and the EPG time, and it isn't even really that hard if you read the read me file that came with XMLTV.

Maybe my setup is too simplistic. I watch/record/pause TV useing two different analog tuners. I watch DVD's (on disc and hard drive). I listen to music (mp3 and wma). I watch movie trailers. I look at the weather.

    I use Media Portal.

    and I must say:
ok, MP have some problems sometimes (I have some graphic problems sometimes or am not able to stop a movie)
but what really the best thing is about MP:
its open source and everyone can make some plugin or skin or whatever for it... thats so great... and it makes so much fun to see e.g. a little plugin that i create by myself growing slowly and integrated in MP :)
even if that plugin have no use at all ;) lol

    i love it...

It's fine to want that kind of functionality in a program, but to say it should have been there to begin with is simply your opinion. I have no need for such a feature so for me, it didn't need to be there to begin with.

Users are free to write plugins and create skins for other HTPC software programs as well. The only difference is that the program itself isn't available for users to modify.
