Is mediaportal going to survive the new xbmc (3 Viewers)

Tryed XBMC Eden beta and I'm still disappointed with picture quality, still, for me, kind of blurry, even HD doesn't look sharp like it does with MEPO and ffdshow dxva. Guess it's codecs, internal windows codec or ffdshow (even without postprocessing) give much better picture for SD and HD.

So, for me, MEPO all the way (even thought I don't use tv card)

I think the biggest advantage for XBMC over MEPO is the OS is free!
OpenELEC is also very compelling if you have the hardware like a REVO as you could just have a USB stick with XBMC on it and a default Windows install on the HDD.

Its a shame windows is so locked down as it hink i9t puts limits on what can be done, but conversely we have the advantage of being in the majority so you would expect faster development and the ability to pick and choose from established programs/code bases

The resolution changer is a big deal. Switching between xvid, mkv, Brit TV and USTV. On XBMC you have to switch it manually and it's easy to forget. This leaves you (or worse, the wife) staring at a black screen with audio, until you change it. With MP's auto changer this isn't a problem.

What do you mean by this? I use XBMC to watch videos of many different types, codecs, and resolutions and have never had to manually switch resolution. It would be too cumbersome to bother if that was the case.

Is this some sort of problem specific to your pc?

Not my PC, but more a case of my TV not accepting 50hz HD video which is used by Brit TV. I would therefore have to manually switch on or off the "change framerate to match videofile" option depending on the source. HOWEVER, since I wrote that post you can now set up rules in the advancedsettings.xml similar to mediaportal.

I no longer use XBMC though because I just can't get smooth 24hz playback no matter what combination of options I choose, but with Mediaportal I can. ​

I have just installed the RC 2 of XBMC and I must admit to being amazed. After being used to MP for several years it took me a little while to figure out how to configure the application but once I seemed to get an understanding it was very straight forward and easy. I had no problems at all with my 150 or so TV series's or around 700 films. Just selecting the appropriate media type and they were all found and the fanart applied.
It works fine with my MCE remote, I have now removed Media Portal, and it starts up fine with The Green Button.
Playback seems to be no problem, even running 24p it has been judder free - but a massive improvement was made when I unticked "Use a fullscreen window rather than true fullscreen".

XBMC seems to be very light and fast to start up and also very responsive to use with a simple configuration.

Hopefully it will work out well

Not sure. I had always endured much pain with the TV aspect of MP and so when Currys started to offload a DVB-T2 box for less that £40, which can record to both an external HD or USB stick, I just bought that instead. It was cheaper than my graphics card and works a treat. In fact it is that good I bought a second one for my other TV.
I might be tempted to put my TV card back in my PC but I see little point at this stage.

i can second this. XBMC with ffdshow is really not my favourite in Picture Quality. And on my system i could not see any real differences in speed.
MediaPortal 1.2.2.0 runs fast and stable. But the most important point is MePos TV Functionality that just works like i want it to do. Integrating TV in XBMC
seems a little complicated to me at the moment. And last: i just love Windows 7. Linux is not a real option for me just because of the minimal knowledge i have.
In case of problems this would just cost unneccessary more time to solve. I already made that experience.

Nevertheless. XBMC is a great project and it sure can be an alternative for some users. But i'll definitely stay with Media Portal!

Why do you mention Linux, it isn't compulsory..?
Unlike MP XBMC will run on many OS's and I'm running it now on Windows 7x64 and it works great. It starts up in around 3 or 4 seconds and the picture quality at 1080p on my 50" TV is superb when running such HD material.
