Run it on the HTPC, connecting to the server.

Also it might be worth checking if the hard drive in the server is the cause. If there's other processes (eg virus scanners, mysql database etc) accessing it when watching a film it could potentially cripple the performance.

There are a few tools that can monitor disk IO's, might be worth running one on the server whilst watching a film and see if there's any spike in activity when the stuttering occurs.

I used Wireshark (similar bit of software) once when I was having client/server network issues. It turned out that my recently replaced router had assigned my HTPC a different IP address. I was using some software to monitor my HTPC using LEDs connected to my COM Port. This software had not liked the IP address change and was bombarding the network with data.

    Hi Cyber,

Try this tool to check if you have bad packet loss:

WinMTR – Appnor's Free Network Diagnostic Tool

In the options set the interval to 0 (to constantly send packets)

    Ran it for 90 minutes:

    |------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------|
    | WinMTR statistics |
    | Host - % | Sent | Recv | Best | Avrg | Wrst | Last |
    |------------------------------------------------|------|------|------|------|------|------|
    | Server - 1 | 15081035 | 15081034 | 0 | 0 | 34 | 0 |

Doesn't look there's any problem with your network. This test isn't conclusive though, the packets it uses are a lot smaller than the SMB packets would be. You could try running it with a packet size (MTU) of 1500 instead of 64 see if there's any difference.

If not I can only think it's hard drive related maybe? (see above)

I also tried to copy the movie Avatar to my HTPC. The speed drops quickly from 70 mb/s to 9mb/s. File is 40gb. Is this related?

    Hi there,

I would say 9Mbps is too low for 1080p (although this is a file copy and not a stream) ;)

Yes I agree 9mb/s sounds low, although it should still be enough as blu ray cannot exceed 56mbit which is 7mb/s. I'm guessing Avatar is pretty close to the maximum at 40gb.

Windows reports an average so for example you may be getting 50mb transferred one second then just 5mb transferred for the next 5 seconds.

Is your entire network 1gbit (ie switch/router and both network cards)?
